Hurri Cosmo

I live in Minnesota where I hold tight to the idea that here, where it’s cold a good part of the year, I won’t age as fast. Yep, I avoid the truth as much as I avoid mirrors. But one of the reasons I love writing is reality doesn’t always offer up a “happily ever after” and being able to take control of that is a powerful lure. Being a happy ending junkie, writing just makes them easier to find. Oh, I doesn’t mind “real life” and I do try to at least keep it in mind when I write my stories, but I truly love creating a wonderful couple, knowing they will fall in love and have their HEA. Every - single - time. And, of course, that is exactly the reason I love reading this genre, too. Give me a glass of red wine, some dark chocolate, and my computer, whether I am reading or writing, and I will entertain myself for hours. The fact I actually get paid to do it, is Snickers bars on the frosting on the cake.

Summary: Mark has always been a Dominant. The Top in every relationship. Just ask Leon, his very ex-boyfriend, because that’s what he told Mark he was. Okay, Mark’s only had the one relationship so the ‘always’ was a reach, but it didn’t matter. It was more than over with now, and Leon was long gone. That is until Leon felt it necessary to show off his new boyfriend, a gorgeous mountain called Rogan, by evidently telling him that Mark was stalking, bullying, badgering, harassing and get this, abusing him. “He’ll kill you, Mark, because he loves me and wants to protect me.” From whom? Skinny little Mark? What a joke. Because all Mark has ever done was exactly what Leon told him to do and that now included staying as far away from Leon as he could get. But how can he do that when Leon is hell-bent on proving all the lies he’s told Rogan about Mark were true, and by any means possible except the actual truth? Thankfully, it seems Rogan’s not quite as clueless about Leon’s wild imagination as Mark has always been. In fact, the big, beautiful man has come to Mark’s rescue a couple of times and has made it clear, Leon and he are not a thing. At least, not anymore. Which is good since Mark is going to need Rogan’s help. Mainly because something else is out to get Mark. Something not Leon. This something isn’t even human…

Summary: Ryan was shocked when he saw the man who had rescued him from a psychotic co-worker three months ago, a man Ryan had been having very sexy dreams about ever since, standing on the same yacht as he was. Learning the man’s name was Jansen Branwyth should have rung a few bells, but Ryan was never one to keep up with the rich and powerful. Now this big, gorgeous man seemed to be in hot pursuit, relentlessly and expertly, backing the confused Ryan against a hard wall. Deliciously turned on by the man’s erotically suggestive flirting, Ryan finds himself now in competition with his former, incredibly beautiful girlfriend, vying for Jansen’s attention. As the heat ramps up, so does Ryan’s self-doubt, forcing Jansen into making it perfectly clear who he intends on taking with him off the boat, even if he must chase down, subdue and throw that certain someone over his shoulder to do it.

Summary: “You’re pregnant, Graham.”   Wow. Life has tossed Graham a lot of curveballs, but he never expected to hear those words. Then, just as Graham and his fated mate, Hyden, are getting used to that amazing news, someone from Graham’s past returns and kidnaps him, threatening the very future they want to build. Turns out Graham is an Oletti, a bloodline of wolf shifters that seems to be part of an ancient prophecy, one that speaks of a hidden magical spring of water that can restore the earth and all that is in it. A power some would kill to possess. Except, in the wrong hands, it can also turn humans and shifters totally away from what, and who, they truly love, tearing families and even fated mates apart.   Unfortunately, Hyden has been forced to drink this water so no one is coming to rescue Graham. It’s now up to him to not only save himself, his unborn child and his fated mate, but very possibly the world as they know it. But superhero capes are hard to come by and he never liked himself much in tights. Still, with the help of his Oletti powers, this should be something he can do, right? Oh, Great Wolf, let this be something I can do...

Summary: Kedon can't wait to go on the three week break from school. His parents are on a vacation for two of them and he's going to have the entire house all to himself. Except he forgot about a school project. One that would be half of his science grade, a grade he needs in order to graduate. The project? The class needs to "partner up" and take a baby home. Luckily, it's only one of those computerized things, and Kedon's convinced it's not really a psychological exercise in "The Effects of a Child on a Young Couple". He thinks it's a not so veiled attempt at sex education; as in scaring the hell out of the seniors into not having any. Thing is, most of the seniors are already eighteen years old. Not only is it too late, it’s going to fall on deaf ears. And to top it off, the popular and powerful Tarell Alan has decided Kedon is going to be his "wife" for the project. But Kedon's not worried. Tarell did it to prove a point. He isn't really going to spend the whole three weeks helping Kedon to take care of a baby. Especially one that seems to cry all the time. But Kedon turns out to be wrong. Now Kedon is on his feet constantly, walking a colicky baby and running from a horny daddy! What’s a boy to do?

Summary: I belong to a Demon Lord. His name is Roman. He’s tall, strong, has dark hair, a deep sexy voice and, let me tell you, absolutely f-ing gorgeous. Yep. I even wear his ring. Third finger, left hand. Except – its’s not a wedding band. Far from it, actually. It simply means I’m his submissive. Well – it doesn’t really mean that either, although I wish it did. No. The ring’s function is only to give me “sight”. Being human, once I had it on, I could suddenly see Roman’s stupid lost legions; very nasty scary things that would as soon kill me as look at me. And because I wear the ring, guess what? It’s now my job to recapture all those creatures for him. Yay me, right? At least I get to be close to Roman… sometimes. But, to tell you the truth, I was tricked into putting this damn ring on by Cathy, some random woman I met at a park, who unfortunately likes Roman, too. A whole lot. She brazenly flirts with the demon every chance she gets and right in front of me, too. Crap, it pisses me off. In fact, she brags she was the one who found me, got the ring on me and then offered me up to Roman like I was a T-bone steak or something. Well – honestly – that part’s okay. However, there’s something else going on. Something big. Because there’s another gorgeous Demon Lord in our little earth realm and he will stop at nothing to capture Roman’s loose legions for himself. Not only that, seems he’s out to capture me, as well. Not exactly sure why... Anyway. My name is Micah and things just got... weird.

Summary: The Minneapolis/Saint Paul 77th police precinct has been labeled as a group of misfits. It's unfair. In reality, they have loads of talent. Paranormal talent. Except, of course, no one knows that. Their job? Chasing and capturing all those creepy crawly things that go bump – or worse – in the night, and sending them back to their realms. In other words, they keep the people of the city safe and totally unaware that doors to other realms even exist. Nick, their boss, is the keeper of those cosmic openings. He is the only one who can find, open, shut, and more importantly, seal other-worldly realm doors, preferably with its scary and sometimes homicidal inhabitants on the other side. Vicious hungry monsters waiting for Nick to mess up. Or for an opening Nick misses. From a single tear comes an unspeakable horror. A dangerous vampire. Ferociously brutal, he is a killing machine. A creature so lethal it will take Nick’s entire team and absolutely all their power to hunt him down to send him back. And the last thing Nick needs is another partner. Especially one as sexy as Arrain. But Arrain intends on being more to Nick than just a partner. Much more. Something Nick cannot allow. Not with the devastating secrets he harbors. Except Arrain has a few secrets of his own and one thing he knows. Nick is next on the vampire’s list. The handsome monster wants not only to seduce the talented Door Keeper, but to suck his power over doors right out of him. If that happens, the world of humans is doomed. Summary: Hi, my name is Trevor. I’m a wolf shifter. I say that like I know what I’m talking about. I don’t. I was simply running off a ton of steam one day when I was about eleven and bam! Okay, not quite that easy or fast but it happened when I was young and stupid. I’m also gay. I say that like I know what I’m talking about with that too. I simply don’t. I’m grown up now and living in the big city which has me too busy to much care about either one of those things. I get out and run my wolf when I can, trying like hell to stay out of the local pack’s territories. Belonging to a “family” just sounds like too much work. I honestly don’t have time for such things. Besides, I was told when I was young the color of my wolf was all wrong. Too silver I guess. Metallic. I thought it looked cool in the full moon. “An Alpha would kill ya soon as look at ya.” My grandpa used to say. Course he wasn't my real grandpa. Just an old man who lived down the street. But he was a shifter too and I thought he knew it all. He probably knew diddly shit either but a guy can’t be too careful. So romance? Way off the radar. But then someone started killing wolves. Started leaving lined up broken bodies all in a nice little row next to the high school in my home town and it got me to thinking. If a shifter is killed in his or her wolf state, does he/she stay that way? Were these dead wolves like me? I had to see what I could do. Kind of like a super hero. Oh yeah. Probably forgot to tell you this. I can turn invisible. Yep, Ghost Wolf to the rescue.

Summary: It had been Tanner’s goal to make sure Camden didn’t waste another birthday all alone. Yep, his good buddy from college was hell bent on getting Camden “some action” as he put it. In fact, the idiot set up an entire weekend get-away on a private remote island where a group of men, including him, would be playing a very sexy game of chase and capture. Happy Birthday, Camden! Oh yes, it promised to be quite the game. An adult twist on "Capture the Flag". Very adult. Especially when it came to what the "flag" actually was and where it went. The fun, very adult part? You still needed to capture your opponent's flag to win. However, Camden had immediately ended up the prey and that big, sexy, dark haired, muscle bound, relentless god of a man, Gunner, was the hunter. And he was closing in. Shouldn’t it be the other way around since this was supposed to be Camden's birthday present? Well, it didn’t matter. There were going to be three rounds of this game. And it appeared like this round Camden was going down before he even reached the first check point. Yep. Going down on all fours, stripped, flag confiscated and – well – let’s just say he would be screwed. Oh yes, well screwed. So... what was the down side of losing again?

Was there a chance he might not have to marry a woman, after all? Regrettably, Diagus finds no one matching the rumor’s description. What he does find is a heinous, black magic plot for murder and Diagus is the next on the list. Tama’s pregnant sister claimed to be carrying the child of a king. Not just any king. The mighty king of Blade Rain. She was determined to get out of the very poor house of Hilman and into the lap of luxury. But fate had its own agenda. About The Book

Hawk is alone, hiding from the world, living in a tiny, rickety cabin his grandfather built. He has few supplies and fewer yet of the skills needed to survive on his own, but because of what he did, because of what his father caused him to do… well, there’s just no other choice. But then one day “Ghost” shows up. A large black lone wolf who begins to “take care of” Hawk. He brings him game, he protects him from predators, and he even pulls him from a raging river. He is Hawk’s only friend and Hawk begins to talk to ghost as if he is human and can understand.

Except Ghost isn’t human.

Ghost has filled a void in Hawk’s life, and he is very grateful, but he is a wolf and Hawk needs the company of a human. In fact, Hawk is desperately lonely, to the point he even tells Ghost he longs for the touch of a man, the first time he has ever said such a wicked thing out loud.

Then one full-moon night, a large, beautiful, naked man breaks into the cabin. At first Hawk is terrified, until he realizes the stranger has Ghost’s amazing golden eyes..

The Review

I don’t read a lot of paranormal, but something told me to take a chance on Hurri Cosmo’s latest book, “Once Upon a Wolf.” It has a great cover, for one thing, and I’ve always adored both Hurri and her awesome author name.

I’m glad I did.

The book tells the tale of a wolf shifter and his human mate. You don’t get any hand-holding here. Hurri plunges you right into the story, so much so that it took me a bit to figure out the historical context, but that’s just a quibble.

I love being immersed in a world and figuring out the parameters as I go. In this case, most of the action takes place in the late 1800’s. It’s centered on a backwoods cabin where our hero, the lanky, lonely Hawk who has forsaken the rest of his kind has gone to live by himself. A chance meeting with a wolf in the woods sets the stage for everything that follows.

Hurri has a gift for character, which is especially evident in Ghost, the wolf who is more than he appears. I loved the initial descriptions of how he moved, he acted and responded in his wolf form. It felt very true and real to me, and put me right into the woods alongside Hawk. No, nothing happened between us… I AM happily married, after all.

And the slow burn here is also done very well (but don’t worry – those among you who adore a hot dom/sub sex scene will be richly rewarded before the end, several sticky times).

Ghost retains his wolf character even as he starts to figure out his human side, and that transitional aspect was also handled very well.

Things come to a head when an old nemesis reappears in Hawk’s life, causing chaos and leading to the climactic moments of the story. I loved how it played out. To Hurri’s credit, I didn’t see a few of the twists coming, and I enjoyed how she sidesteps some of the typical plot paths in favor of something different from her characters.

The way things end up between the two of them, and the way local society handles things, is probably not historically accurate. But hey, we are talking wolf-shifter here, and it made me happy to dream of a better world than the one we live in now.

I loved “Once Upon a Wolf,” and hope Hurri will take us back into this world soon.

Perseus trains there and waits for the day when he will be able to take the throne of Argos. Despite potential future glory, Perseus’s fellow students think he is weak. By the time he reaches manhood, he has given up the hope of having any real friends, until Antolios, a son of Apollo, takes an unexpected interest in him. Perseus and Antolios fall in love, but Antolios knows it cannot last and leaves Seriphos. Perseus, grief-stricken and lonely, rebels against the Fates, thinking he can avoid the prophecy and live his own life. But when the gods find him, he is thrust into an epic adventure. With his divine powers, he fights gorgons and sea serpents, and battles against his darker nature. Perseus strives to be his own man… but the gods have other plans.

ANNOUNCEMENT/GIVEAWAY: Graham’s Rescue – Hurri Cosmo

Graham's Rescue - Hurri Cosmo
Graham's Rescue - Hurri Cosmo

Hurri Cosmo has a new MM paranormal romance out, The Oletti Shifters Book 2: “Graham’s Rescue.”

“You’re pregnant, Graham.”

Wow. Life has tossed Graham a lot of curveballs, but he never expected to hear those words. Then, just as Graham and his fated mate, Hyden, are getting used to that amazing news, someone from Graham’s past returns and kidnaps him, threatening the very future they want to build. Talk about curveballs! Graham is an Oletti, a bloodline of wolf shifters that seems to be part of an ancient prophecy, one that speaks of a hidden magical spring of water that can restore the earth and all that is in it. A power some would kill to possess. Except, in the wrong hands, it can also turn humans and shifters totally away from what, and who, they truly love, tearing families and even fated mates apart.

Unfortunately, Hyden has been forced to drink this water so no one is coming to rescue Graham. It’s now up to him to not only save himself, his unborn child and his fated mate, but very possibly the world. Except superhero capes are hard to come by and he never liked himself much in tights. Still, with the help of his Oletti powers, this should be something he could do, right? Oh, Great Wolf, let this be something I can do…

Graham's Rescue meme

Dreven shuffled to stand before Hyden and Graham and Graham couldn’t help but gaze up at the man. Oh! Such a kind face. Plus, he was beaming ear to ear. But even bent over, this old man was taller, wider, broader built than Graham. He was quite impressive. However, that huge smile faded as he studied Graham. After a few moments Dreven sighed and shook his head. Graham shot a wide-eyed glance up at Hyden who frowned deeply. What was going on? Was there a problem? Was that problem Graham? Oh damn, were they not fated mates after all? Had that been a lie too? He tried to pull away from Hyden but Hyden just tightened his grip. “Hang on, pup,” he whispered.

The spiritual leader leaned over to kiss Graham’s forehead. Reaching up, he brought Hyden’s face down to kiss his forehead as well. Immediately, Hyden let out a breath and relaxed beside Graham which allowed him to breathe again. Evidently, it was some sort of ritual for accepting Graham into the pack, maybe announcing a mating. Whatever it was sent the room into a low roar of mutterings. The older man held up a hand then turned back to Graham when the room once again was quiet.

“Oh, little one, for most of us life consists of choosing paths. We are tasked with making many decisions every day that affect what we do and where we go. Some are obvious choices, like the jobs we are meant to do. Others not so clear, like who we are to mate with. Still others of us,” he glanced up at Hyden, “make choices that affect us all and we are glad for it.” He nodded at Hyden before returning his attention back to Graham. “For every path we take, many others continue to open to us. Paths of glorious joy, love, a chance at dreams. And sometimes deception and perhaps betrayal. And so it goes all of our lives.” The older man sucked in a breath and let it out slowly as he touched Graham’s stomach. “But for a few there is an ancient calling that will allow only one path.” He gazed into Graham’s eyes. “You, my pup, are about to witness greatness.” He glanced up at Hyden. “Take good care of them, Alpha. The child he carries will change our world. And… I see great trouble ahead.”

There were gasps all around the room, the questioning whispered words of ‘child’ and ‘could he be pregnant’ flowed like a gentle wave.

Dreven’s smile, although a bit sad now, resumed as he stepped back and turned to the crowd. “We are in the presence of a pivotal moment in the lives of shifters. This” – he gestured back at Hyden and Graham – “is a true fated, destiny-bound mating between our great leader, Hyden, and this young man, Graham. A mating, of which, I can do nothing but approve.”

There was a moment of hesitation but then a cheer rose loudly from the gathered pack members. Finally, Hyden raised his hand for silence. When the noise died down, he spoke. “I did not need for the Shaman to confirm that Graham and I are fated mates. But it is good that he sees it. Thank you, Dreven, and,” he bowed slightly toward the older man. “we obviously need to talk later?” The older man nodded once and stepped back into the crowd while Hyden spoke again. “I now want to introduce to you my fated mate, Graham, soon to be Solfang. Yes, he is one of the rare Oletti and he carries my child.” He gazed down at Graham. “No one was as surprised or pleased as I was to learn that very thing just this morning.” He returned his attention to the crowd. “That is the reason I wanted this meeting. I wanted to announce Graham and I will be joined as one under the next Mating Moon a month from tonight.”

The cheer that went up was wild and the pack crowded in around Hyden and Graham. Hyden held Graham tightly to his side as congratulations and slaps on the back and handshakes rocked them both.

Suddenly there was a shout from the living room and all attention turned to Myrk, who was standing on top of one of Hyden’s beautiful coffee tables.

And he was very obviously pissed.

“You!” he pointed at Graham. “You husband stealer!” Myrk glanced around the room and then down to the elders who were sitting, stunned, on the couches. “You all know Hyden was to mate with me. And not this… this… imposter who somehow bewitched Hyden into believing he’s an Oletti. He’s no Oletti! He only claims that because he knows that’s what I am, and he thinks to trap Hyden with his fantasy of being pregnant. You can’t let this happen. You just can’t. Hyden is mine. He said so. You have to make him honor that.”

Hi. My name is Hurri Cosmo. I live in Minnesota where I hold tight to the idea that here, where it’s cold a good part of the year, I won’t age as fast. Yep, I avoid the truth as much as I avoids mirrors. But one of the reasons I love writing is reality doesn’t always offer up a “happily ever after” and being able to take control of that is a powerful lure. Oh, I doesn’t mind “real life” and I do try to at least keep it in mind when I write my stories, but I truly love creating a wonderful couple, knowing they will fall in love and have their HEA. Every – single – time. And, of course, that is exactly the reason I love reading this genre, too.

Superior Jewel - Hurri Cosmo

Hurri Cosmo has a new MM D/s romance out: The Superior Jewel. And there’s a giveaway!

Ryan was shocked when he saw the man who had rescued him from a psychotic co-worker three months ago, a man Ryan had been having very sexy dreams about ever since, standing on the same yacht as he was. Learning the man’s name was Jansen should have rang a few bells but Ryan was never one to keep up with the rich and powerful.

Now this big sexy man seemed to be in hot pursuit, relentlessly and expertly, backing the confused Ryan against a hard wall. Deliciously turned on by the man’s erotically suggestive flirting, Ryan finds himself now in competition with his former girlfriend, vying for Jansen’s attention.

As the heat ramps up, so does Ryan’s self-doubt, forcing Jansen into making it perfectly clear who he intends on taking with him off the boat, even if he has to chase down, subdue and throw that certain someone over his shoulder to do it.

The Superior Jewel meme - Hurri Cosmo

“Come on, Cheyenne, please? This table is fine.” Ryan tried to whisper the words, incredibly embarrassed the waiter stood right behind him with an anxious frown, basically wringing his hands. He hadn’t had the time or the courage to search and find Jansen Branwyth. All he knew was Jansen did not grace any of the tables closest to this one and so this was the best table in the house as far as he was concerned.

“No! I want one closer to the windows.” She huffed, stomping her small foot and pointing farther into the large space.

“But, Cheyenne, you’ve made it clear you don’t even like Lake Superior. Why do you suddenly have to sit near a window?” Although Ryan would not have minded in the least. But as he glanced in the direction she’d been pointing, his heart began to race. Great. There he sat—at a table totally alone and watching them. Well, watching Cheyenne, which had to be the reason she wanted to sit over there.

And then again, maybe not. The man had actually been flirting with him earlier. Fucking bastard.

And now Cheyenne was making them a spectacle, a show. Damn it.

“I am sorry, ma’am”—the waiter fidgeted nervously—“but this is the table assigned to you and your guest. Please accept my sincere apologies if this table is not to your expectations.”

“No,” Ryan pleaded. “This table is fine. Thank you.” He turned again to Cheyenne. “Please, Cheyenne. Let’s just get through this night, okay?” He took the chair the waiter held for her and told her as best he could with his eyes to sit down.

She stood for a moment glaring at him, then walked to a chair on the other side of the table, most likely so she would face Jansen, and waited for Ryan to come around to seat her. Ryan let out a breath, simply grateful she gave in. Besides, better she face Jansen, because he sure as hell didn’t want to. His stomach was still doing little flips every time he thought about the man. He had a very real longing to talk with Jansen some more, to hear his voice, have his attention, and those strong emotions were extremely confusing and frightening. In the man’s presence, he could handle them. However, outside that direct influence he was more inclined to have a melt down.

He walked shakily over to the chair and pulled it out for Cheyenne. She deliberately and artfully sat, pulling on her too-tight dress and making a show of placing the napkin in her lap.

She glared up at Ryan with murder in her eyes. “Fine,” she said under her breath, “but you owe me.”

Oh dear God, he owed her? As if. Ryan tried to smile, failed, but made his way to the chair he’d originally held for her, sat. Glancing up at the waiter he asked, “Scotch and soda—easy on the soda—please?”

The waiter’s expression was warm and grateful. “Of course, sir.” Then he turned toward Cheyenne, the smile disappearing, returning to nervousness again. “And for the ma’am?”

Cheyenne shot the waiter a glare. “Quit hovering! Bring me a cosmo.”

Ryan touched the waiter’s arm when he turned back to Ryan. “Thank you.”

The waiter beamed. “Please, sir, call me James.” He bowed slightly and left.

“What now, Ryan? You flirting with the wait staff?” She snickered.

Ryan blushed hard yet again. Flirting? Maybe, but not with the wait staff. She had no clue how close to the truth she had come, but it still made him dizzy… and pissed. His drink could not get there soon enough. He had tossed back only that one—well one and a half—before he made his way down to the dining room doors to wait for Cheyenne. Of course, she wasn’t there on time, no big surprise. He’d finally found her upstairs on the other side of the boat, near the back bar.

“What are you doing?” he had asked her. “Why didn’t you meet me at the dining room doors? We’re going to be late.”

She had sniffed, obviously angry for some reason, but it was something she didn’t seem to think Ryan needed to know. And he sure as hell wasn’t going to argue that point. She pasted on her dazzling Cheyenne smile, put her arm through Ryan’s, and tugged him in the direction of the stairs.

“I was just chatting with Jansen. He is such a flirt. It’s a good thing you and I aren’t together any longer because you would have been livid. He asked me to accompany him to the dining room, but I told him I was going to sit with you. However, we will be getting together later for a drink and… well, whatever should follow, I guess.” She giggled. “He is just such a charming man.”

So, he was charming to her too? Flirting with her, as well? Asshole! He asked her to sit with him, and then he asked her on a date? Damn it. Why did it hurt so badly? This had been expected, which was the exact reason he had trained his mind and body not to feel anything. Instead, it felt like a fucking heart attack, a bag of rocks in his stomach, a thunderstorm in his head. Of course, he would pick the girl. Especially the amazing Jansen would pick the gorgeous girl.

I am nowhere near drunk enough for this night.

Cheyenne leaned over the table with an expression of pure disgust. “No kidding? Are you seriously flirting with that male waiter?”

He had been getting those vibes all along. She hated many things but “other than heterosexual” was something to be scorned. So were taxis but that was a totally different story. And even though the battle he waged by himself in the middle of his own mind whether or not he was “other than” would continue, he would no longer support her ridiculous ideals. “The truth is no, even though there would be nothing at all wrong with it. But I really do wish you would stop drooling all over Mr. Branwyth.” And by that he meant himself.

“Really, Ryan?” she murmured, having leaned back again, digging into her small pocket purse for her compact mirror. “Are you jealous? It’s so not like you.” She fussed with her hair, rubbing a finger across her lips. Why did women think primping at a dinner table was ever appropriate?

Suddenly two hands appeared on the table on either side of Ryan and a very hot presence loomed over his head. The heat of the tall body immediately permeated the fabric of his shirt and even before the man spoke, he knew who crowded into his personal space.

“Who is drooling all over me? This beautiful young lady… or this intriguing young man?” The last part Jansen said directly into Ryan’s ear when the man leaned over farther yet, his long hair enveloping them for a moment, making Ryan’s heart skip several beats and his finally cooled-off “demeanor” jump back to attention.

“Jansen!” Cheyenne probably would have clapped her hands if they had been free. She quickly threw her mirror back into her clutch. “How lovely to see you again so soon.”

Ryan was more than shocked and even embarrassed when Cheyenne all but batted her eyelashes at the man. Could she be more obvious? Of course, Cheyenne believed in beating the hell out of the bush as opposed to anywhere around it. Subtle as a November gale, she went full-out after everything she ever wanted. At one point, she had wanted Ryan. Now it was obvious she wanted Jansen.

It was becoming increasingly clear Ryan did as well.

What a fucking turn of events.

Hi, my name is Hurri Cosmo and I am a happy ending junkie. I always have been. You can be pretty rest assured everything I write will have one. I am not big on angst. I believe we get enough of that in real life so when I go to read something, to make the real world go away for awhile, I will most likely not chose something that will make me cry. So I write for those people who, at least occasionally, feel the same way. I’m okay with the fact I will probably never write anything “important” but I guess I will have to see where my imagination takes me. I would love it if you would come along.

The Ex's Boyfriend - Hurri Cosmo

Hurri Cosmo has a new MM paranormal ghost romance out: The Ex’s Boyfriend. And there’s a giveaway!

Mark has always been a Dominant.

“He’ll kill you, Mark, because he loves me and wants to protect me.”

From whom?

The Ex's Boyfriend meme

They took the elevator to the sixth floor and headed cautiously down a deserted hall. Okay, maybe it was only Mark who walked warily. Rogan marched slightly ahead of him and seemed to barge down the hall with his chest puffed out like some storybook bodyguard protecting the prince. However, no apparitions flew out at them this time, no lights exploded trying to kill them. When they got to Mark’s apartment, Rogan snatched the set of keys Mark dug out of his pocket and opened the door of 612 and attempted to turn on the light.

“It doesn’t work,” Mark remarked. “It never has.”

As if that might have been important in the whole scheme of things, Rogan turned to him. “Really? Why?”

“I have no idea. They have never been able to fix it, either.”

Rogan grumbled a string of profanities against landlords as he pulled out his phone. “Hey Raptor. Flashlight.” The phone shot out a bright beam and Rogan shined it into the apartment. “Where is a switch that does work?”

“Right here.” Mark glanced around the apartment before he tiptoed over to the switch in the kitchen and turned it on. The apartment lit up enough to see that everything was normal―so to speak. The destroyed TV was right where it had been when they left, debris still everywhere. Not the chaos Mark had walked into with Leon, but shivers of that time chased through him as well. “What I don’t get is why you don’t even have a scratch on you.”

“That is a mystery,” Rogan murmured. “What’s even more an unknown is why you were basically sliced in the first place. Cut, I would understand. But sliced?” He walked over to the large, jagged piece laying against the wall, the piece that had been laced with blood but no longer appeared to be and picked it up. “This should never have been sharp enough to do that.” He brought it over for Mark to see.

“Fuck,” Mark whispered as he gazed at the piece of plastic. “It’s… like a knife.” And it was. The six-inch, razor-edged side appeared paper thin, to the point of it being see-through. As if someone had purposely honed it down to that sharpness. “But… didn’t it have blood on it?”

Rogan narrowed his eyes and glared back at the plastic as if it had just lied to him. “You’re right. It did. Exactly my point.”

“Which is?”

Rogan glanced briefly at Mark. “This isn’t right. I mean, how does something like this even happen?” Rogan’s lips pursed together.

“So, what are you saying?”

“I’m not sure.” Rogan gazed down at Mark. “And I don’t like not knowing. I will find some answers. That I promise.” He sighed. “Now what do we need to take with us so we can get out of here?”

Mark packed a backpack while Rogan kept watch. Mark would have thought it laughable if he wasn’t so panicked. It was one thing to be bullied by Leon. Quite another by a ghost.

“The extra apartment key is in the kitchen drawer,” Mark told Rogan as he threw the backpack over his shoulder.

Rogan immediately reached over and grabbed the backpack. “Go get it. I got this.”

Heat climbing Mark’s face he walked quickly to the drawer. “I can carry it. I’m not a princess.”

Rogan smirked but remained silent as he adjusted the backpack and held out a hand to accept the key. “Thanks,” he said, winking at Mark when he dropped the key in his hand.

“I don’t know what you plan on doing but have at it.”

Rogan grimaced as if he were guilty of something and shook his head.

When they arrived at Mark’s dad’s house, Rogan insisted on walking Mark in. “I didn’t keep you safe like I promised. He deserves an explanation.”

“Are you kidding me? I’m not some fragile teenager on a date. Besides, I can take care of myself.”

“I know that. But security is my job, and I should have…”

“Should have what?”

“Known.” He knocked on the door.

“Known? How? Why?”

But Rogan remained silent. Except it was clear he was battling something in his head.

“Whatever,” Mark mumbled. “Just… I can take care of myself.” Mark went to knock as well but the door flew open in front of him, Mark’s dad standing on the other side.

“What the fuck is going on out here?” Rob snarled, startling both Mark and Rogan.

“Sir!” Rogan nearly shouted back, gaining the older man’s attention. Then he lowered his voice probably realizing how loud he was being. “Mr. Corda. Sorry to wake you…”

“What the hell happened to you?” Rob grabbed Mark and pulled him into the house. “Why the bandages?” He turned his attention back to Rogan. “Why is my son covered in bandages?”

Mark took immediate offence. “Dad, I’m standing right here! Ask me!”

“Um… sir…” Rogan interrupted. “it’s a long story.”

ANNOUNCEMENT: Roman – Demon Rising, Hurri Cosmo

Roman - Demon Rising - Hurri Cosmo
Roman - Demon Rising

Hurri Cosmo has a new MM paranormal/sci fi romance, book one of “Demon Rising Book One”: “Roman – Demon Rising.”

I belong to a Demon Lord. His name is Roman. He’s tall, strong, has long dark hair, a deep sexy voice and, let me tell you, absolutely f-ing gorgeous.

Not only that, seems he’s out to catch me, as well.

Huh. My name is Micah and things just got very interesting.

Roman - Demon Rising meme

What? You’re kidding, right?” Micah fully turned to the woman. “This took place over seventy-five years ago. How is it this guy is still alive, not to mention that no one has ever heard this story? Or seen those monsters before now? How could he not unlock the doors? Why would there be a lock on those doors in the first place? A big hall like that? Cathy, none of this is making sense.”

She laughed bitterly. “Yeah, but what you’re seeing outside is? I’m telling you the truth.”

“Okay, you have a point, but what it seems to me you’re telling me is some made up concoction that covers upthe truth.” Her eyes narrow in anger. “But, let’s say I believe you. What does he have to do with this? What is this ‘passing on of the talent’ shit and that… that ring have to do with all of this?” They were interrupted again with a loud crashing sound. It was still outside but it was clear what they were trying to do. “Look, Cathy, kudos to your circle and all but I would feel a lot better if we were able to get away altogether from those… whatever they are out there. Somehow, we need to get back to my car. Any ideas?”

She glared at him, obviously hurt by, first, him not going all jelly and drama with her story and, then, with his distrust in her hastily poured salt circle. Then something clicked behind those big brown doe-like eyes. “Actually, there’s a tunnel. It goes back…” She seemed to stop to think. “Oh. To the park. It goes to the park. Well, I mean, it goes to the sewer system and you can get to the park by it.”

Micah did laugh this time. “A tunnel? For real? Dark and dank, just like in all those slasher movies? Man, I did not see that coming. Although I admit, I should have.” He laughed again.

“It’ll all make sense, I promise. There’s so much more to tell you.”

“Oh, believe me, none of this is ever going to make any sense. But don’t worry. I’ll still listen to your story as soon as we get away from here. I suppose the entrance to this tunnel is in the basement?” She sighed, then nodded. “Perfect. Just fucking perfect.” He rose to his feet just as the shuffling noises increased, this time the sounds of crackling wood joined in. He found himself questioning the intelligence of these demons. Wouldn’t it be far easier to come through a window instead of a wall? “Lead away.”

It was an old house. Old houses had scary, smelly basements. The stairs were always narrow and creaky and there was ever only that one naked light bulb hung on a thin wire that once you pulled on the chain to turn it on, it pushed out only enough light to define the deep shadows, not chase them away. It would also swing on that thin wire making those deep shadows move with a life of their own. Common sense told you it was nothing, your fiercely beating heart told you it was every ghost and goblin from your childhood come to steal your soul.

Cathy had grabbed a flashlight, an indication the basement itself was going to be their first challenge, and when they reached the bottom of the stairs, she turned it on. The shadows scattered like leaves before a storm. It felt almost powerful; like it released some kind of energy with its beam. He shook his head. The only powerful thing in this basement right now was his imagination. He stuck close behind Cathy as she moved haltingly toward a far wall. Micah gazed up at that wall trying to see a door or an opening, but he saw nothing. Possibly the tunnel was hidden and would only open to those who knew which brick to push. Maybe the wall itself was an illusion. You simply walked right through. Perhaps that wall was not where she was going.

It might even be she brought me down here to murder me and eat my beating heart.

Crap. Get a hold of yourself, you idiot.

She stopped in the middle of the floor and swung the light around as if looking for something.

Are you kidding me?

“You… you do know where this tunnel is, don’t you?”

“Well, not really. I’ve never used it. I only know it exists.” She swung the light back fast, again making the shadows dance. Micah had a feeling the shadows did not like to dance.

“Give me that thing.” He grabbed the flashlight from her and stepped in front, moving the beam of light slowly this time along the walls. There. Right there. Micah spotted an indent in the wall. He walked quickly over to it, trying hard to ignore the fact that several small, and maybe some not so small, animals skittered across the floor at his approach, the light and his eye just catching the movement, not the actual sight of any of them.

Oh man. This was sooo not good.

But the light did illuminate that indent in the wall and, hallelujah, yes indeed, this was a door. He handed the flashlight to Cathy and reached out to the recessed handle, sticking his hand into the ugly hole, feeling ancient spider webs bar his way. He swallowed hard but pushed through, grabbing the cold metal of the handle and twisted it. It screamed, metal against metal, but it turned, and he felt it release the door as the plunger inched back. Keeping a hold on the handle he pulled, but the door didn’t move. “Shit.” He knew on some level that was what would happen. He absolutely knew the door would be stuck and they would be trapped down here, like rats. The flesh-hungry zombies, dressed like school children, would lumber down the stairs and…

Just as he was about to finish that gruesome and bloody fantasy in his head, there was a crash upstairs.

Demons were in the house.

Hurri Cosmo

Hi, my name is Hurri Cosmo and I am a happy ending junkie. I always have been. You can be pretty rest assured everything I write will have one. I am not big on angst. I believe we get enough of that in real life so when I go to read something, to make the real world go away for awhile, I will most likely not chose something that will make me cry.

So I write for those people who, at least occasionally, feel the same way. I’m okay with the fact I will probably never write anything “important” but I guess I will have to see where my imagination takes me. I would love it if you would come along.

Can a man with a dark heart heal a man with a broken one?

Logan Perry was offered a job caring for an elderly lady a thousand miles from his home in Iowa. Looking for a place to hide, it seems to be the perfect opportunity to escape. So Logan runs to Texas. All he wants is a roof over his head and food in his stomach. So moving into the amazing McFarren Manor he believes is all he needs.

Bradley McFarren is only looking for someone to care for his aging grandmother. Too busy with the family multi-billion dollar real estate firm, he just doesn't have time. With no personal life to speak of, Bradley has kept his heart safe. As long as Gail, his beloved grandmother, is cared for, he thinks it's all he needs.

But what both their hearts truly desire is a place to belong.

Excerpt:

It had been the first time Logan thought about the possibility Gail was actually going to die. It had frightened him more than he thought possible. Bradley, who was in Chicago at the time, chartered a flight and had been at the hospital in less than three hours, just as Gail was going into surgery, a surgery Bradley had insisted she have. Being over the age of ninety, the doctors had strongly advised against it. They were convinced she would not live through it. But having the name McFarren moved mountains. Bradley said Gail was not done with life yet and her strength would pull her through.

And he was right.

Gail had sailed through surgery. Logan remembered Bradley actually kissing him when she woke up in recovery. He had picked the smaller Logan right off his feet, swung him around and then kissed him firmly on the lips. Logan had been so incredibly shocked at the time he didn’t know what to do. His body, however, knew exactly and reacted strongly to that kiss. Logan actually became dizzy due to his blood rushing south like that. But, as it turned out, the kiss had only been a joyous reaction to Gail’s near miraculous feat. Bradley would have done the same to any other nurse or even a doctor had one been standing as close to him as Logan had been.

But Logan never forgot it.

Because Logan was in love, and had been for a long time.

He wasn’t sure when it had started, this overpowering crush. Most likely that very first day he’d met with the man in his office, three years ago.

When Logan first saw Mr. McFarren he had to admit to actually drawing in his breath. The large man, who Logan had learned prior to arriving had recently turned forty-two, was more than beautiful. Tall, broad shoulders, deep resonating voice, he should have been intimidating but his kind and gentle eyes gave him completely away. From his dark, flawlessly styled hair to his expensive leather shoes, he was exactly Logan’s every dream come true.

“Hello. My name is Bradley McFarren.” He had held out his perfectly manicured hand, and Logan was almost afraid to touch it. But then Bradley enveloped Logan’s fingers in his own, and it was almost as if he swallowed Logan in one gulp.

Logan remembered being thrilled at that thought. In fact, it had been the first time in a very long time that Logan had become aroused. Going to school and then working more than full-time kept him incredibly busy, and his life in a tiny conservative town had not allowed for him to do much in the way of exploring relationships of any kind.

“Hi. I’m Logan Perry,” he had breathed.

“Well, Logan Perry, please sit down.” Bradley had indicated a chair in front of a massive desk, and Logan had slipped into it, perching on the edge, trying like everything to hide his intense interest. “I’ve looked over your resume and, I have to say, I’m intrigued. What makes a fine-looking young man like you even apply for this type of a position?”

Logan had smiled like an idiot when the gorgeous man called him “fine looking.” But Bradley had been right in that a young man wanting to take care of his eighty-nine year old grandmother had to seem odd. Logan remembered thinking he would never even be called for an interview, much less receive the job, but he needed to escape his pathetic existence in Iowa. When he received the tip, through a friend, of a private nursing job all the way down in Texas, he knew he had to try for it. Room, board, a small allowance, the use of a car and hundreds of miles away from Iowa, it was the perfect opportunity for escape. Now that he was here, he was determined to at least be considered.

“First of all, Mr. McFarren, I’m not sure that thirty years old is actually considered young but I’m a well-trained RN. I’ve enjoyed years of working in rehab centers in their transitional care and assisted living areas. I am very patient and kind, and love the older generation. I trust you have checked my references. You will find I am a perfect choice for your grandmother’s companion.”

“But you’re a man. I have to admit, the only real reason I am interviewing you is because I wanted to know why a man would apply for this position. So far, all I have and all you have given me are your qualifications. Which are stellar because, in answer to your statement, of course I checked your references, but none of the ones on your resume. Having money gives me the ability to take the inside track. To be frank, I was impressed by your work ethic and standards. I found nothing but glowing reports of how wonderfully you do your job. But you see, Mr. Perry, I adore my grandmother. She means the world to me and I have no intention of allowing just anyone access to her. No matter how qualified. What I want to know is your motive in wanting this job.”

“Motive, sir?”

“You’re coming all the way from Iowa. Have you no family? Friends? Why are you running, Mr. Perry?”

We all want a place to call home. Somewhere we feel accepted, maybe even loved, and safe. Logan thinks he has found it at the McFarren Manor where he takes care of Gail, an elderly lady with cancer. Her grandson Bradley comes to visit often and Logan, despite knowing nothing much can come of it, has fallen in love with him. But then Gail goes into a coma and is about to die, and the family descends on the manor - in anticipation of the reading of the will, not out of concern – and the gloves come off. The result is a heart-wrenching story that had me glued to the pages because I wanted only the best for big-hearted Logan. And just for the record – I really hate all the other idiots who never visited Gail while she was ill but suddenly appear when they think there is money to be had. Good job on depicting them so perfectly, Hurri!

Logan is a really nice guy. He is modest, has a big heart, and wants only the best for everyone. For him the emerging greed and callousness some of the other family members show is almost unimaginable and definitely hurtful. Worse than that, Bradley is on some business trip and cannot be reached. Logan is too nice to fight back, plus he doesn’t see it is his place anyway. He is, after all, just the hired help, right? Oh, I couldn’t wait for them to get their comeuppance! And the time that Logan had to wait for Bradley to finally arrive and take things into his hands seemed to last forever. I was on the edge of my seat for it to happen almost as much as Logan.

If you like stories that go from incredibly tense to wonderfully sweet (but not before some of your hair turned to gray), if you want to see two men who seem too nice for this world get their happy ending – against all expectations, and if you’re looking for a read that is as suspenseful and heart rate accelerating as it is sweet and romantic, then you will probably like this novella as much as I did. It’s already on my list of comfort and cheer-me-up stories!

on Drako's Pen:

Review: Gods this was cute. No seriously. This is one of those dream come true type of stories. Logan is too nice for his own good, but it's adorable. He's just looking for an escape when he goes for a job caring for an elderly woman. Bradley needs someone to care for his grandmother and takes a chance to hire Logan. What they find is a much closer relationship than they could have hoped for. They essentially find each other. It's short and sweet and could make a single guy bitter, but honestly, it's a great story.

on Redz World:

A Place to Belong by author Hurri Cosmo is really well done book. I really kept re-reading this book because I loved it so much. Logan has had a hard road. His parents disowned him due to him being gay. His friends abandoned him. He is starting over. When he sees an ad for a live in caretaker for an ailing woman he takes it. He just never expected to fall in love along the way. Logan is kind, sweet, giving, an amazing person. He just needs a family.
Bradley watches out for his grandmother. He hired Logan and has not been able to stop thinking about him since. He is drawn to Logan like no other person in his life. Bradley is a workaholic. He needs someone in life that cares, and he can talk to. Logan is that person. Bradley has never thought about being gay, but maybe the heart knows what it wants and love does not have to have definitions.
When Bradley's grandmother dies, he has to make some choices. He must do so fast before Logan leaves for good.
I loved Logan's loyalty. He really showed he is strong, passionate, and just the kind of friend you really want in your life.
Bradley was harder to see his feelings but once you do, they are an amazing couple. I was routing for them all the way.
I think this is the story you pick up when you want to believe in family and true love.

Excerpt

Once Upon A Wolf

Taking care of the man was proving to be a little more intense then Ghost first thought it would be. Comical, too. Feeding him was no challenge but keeping him from killing himself with his eagerness for life certainly was turning out to be.

His own readiness for something just out of reach every time he was with the man was also a huge trial. Something quite unusual had happened in the river this morning. Something unexplainable, even by Ghost’s standards. For a moment in time, a time of great desperation, he had been able to hang on to his human with more than just paws. He couldn’t see, the water and the situation too demanding for that. But Ghost had been able to wrap something around the man’s hips, and he knew his paws were not capable of that.

Something in his very being had changed in him ever since the human had come into his life.

He had always been attracted by the man’s aroma, always wanted to mix it with his own. His desire to taste him was overwhelming at times. Making the human his was easy enough since there had been no challenge, but it was claiming him that seemed impossible. If the human had been a wolf, Ghost would have mated with him. He didn’t care Hawk was very obviously a male of his species. How could it matter? Except, the fact Hawk was human, and Ghost was not, did.

However, there was something else that was just at the surface and with the full moon this very night, he was more aware of it than ever.

He could feel it. It was coming.

Tonight.

He loped into the woods, quickly finding and killing a fat rabbit. He then trotted it back to the cabin and laid it on the doorstep. He yipped and scratched at the door, but he heard no movement inside. Appeared the man was sleeping. Good. After this morning’s ordeal there was no doubt he needed it. But frustratingly, this door was proving to be a real problem. He had watched how the man opened it, with those marvelous hands of his. He lifted a paw to examine it. Similar. He also had fingers of a fashion. They weren’t long like the man’s, but he had claws, which he liked. Something the man didn’t have. Still, those fingers…

And he couldn’t help but think that was exactly what he had when he grabbed hold of the man in the river. Hands and fingers.

But it didn’t matter at the moment because, even if he had somehow, miraculously, sprouted hands this morning, they were gone now. And he had no idea how to get them back. Ghost jogged into the woods and gathered more game for the man, laying it all at his door. He would wait patiently for the man to wake up.

***

Hawk woke with a start. Had he heard something?

He threw his cover off, jumped to his feet and ran to the door. It wasn’t until he had flung the door open, expecting to find Ghost standing there, that he realized, not only was he well rested again but his feet no longer hurt. At all.

And there was quite the array of game lying at his feet. Seemed Ghost had already been and gone a number of times.

Hawk lifted one of his feet to examine the bottom. Once scratched and cut, now it appeared completely healed. He could still make out scabby scars but that was it. How could that be? It was only hours ago he had done the damage and these wounds seemed days old. He remembered how Ghost’s wounds, too, had given the impression of being days old once he had him in his cabin and near the fire. The large wolf had hardly needed his care. He recalled joking about Ghost’s magical skin. Was there something truly enchanted about Ghost? Could it be when he had licked Hawk’s wounds the wolf had not only stopped any kind of infection from taking hold, but also healed him like this?

Hawk pulled in a long breath as he examined his other foot and found the same thing. He could see where the cuts had been but that was it. Then, checking the minor scratches on his arms and legs and even thinking about the ant bite on his ass, he marveled that they were all completely healed. Was this proof magic existed? His father had believed in it. So did most of the townspeople. Not only did they believe in magic, but in monsters. Growing up, Hawk had witnessed more than a few times his father picking up his gun and heading out the door to meet up with any number of the townsmen, all crashing together into the dark woods after drinking themselves into false bravado and whipping themselves into a murderous frenzy. “Hunting the monsters,” he would sometimes yell out at Hawk if he caught him staring at him. Hawk never asked where he was going. Not when March was like that, all wild-eyed and smelling of liquor. He learned quickly asking his father anything in that state would as soon receive a fist to the face as it would an answer. If March offered up any kind of explanation, ever, Hawk knew to be content with it.

As far as hunting monsters, Hawk was never invited to go. “Too fucking stupid,” had been the reply, accompanied by a hard palm to the back of Hawk’s head when, one time, a friend of March’s had the audacity of asking why. “Don’t care if the dumb sonofabitch shoots himself, but I don’t want him shooting me!”

No, Hawk never went on those excursions into the deep wood where evidently the monsters lived, although it had been a favorite pastime with the men in town. However, Hawk thought those forays were more often about getting naked and drinking till dawn. Oh yes. He couldn’t help but hear the hushed stories. It was why Hawk wasn’t invited. No wives or kids. “Hunting monsters” was messy business and was no place for the squeamish. True enough since they were all old men, ugly and fat and wrinkly. But Hawk thought about the naked part anyway. He thought about it a lot. Especially these last several days because the moon was nearly full, and it was on these nights that the town’s menfolk would go about “protecting their village.”

Did he believe there were real monsters in the woods? Absolutely, but nothing more than the normal grizzly or black bear. However, he was beginning to believe in magic. All his wounds were healed, and he held the magic had to have come from the wolf. And now, because of that magic, running out to check on his traps was possible.

Excerpt:

He was a lone wolf. After those first few times seeing him, Hawk figured he had to be. The animal certainly was big enough to survive alone. Obviously strong, stealth. Even though those eyes were beautiful, eerily golden, they seemed defiant, alpha-like. His thick coat was very dark, even black, but still Hawk called him Ghost. The name came from how fast the wolf could move because he would appear out of seemingly nowhere, standing and silently watching. And then, be gone. Just like that.

Ghost had been stalking the cabin for a number of weeks now. He wouldn’t come close, but Hawk did not mistake that for being timid. He didn’t even think it was caution. The wolf was fully aware he could rip out Hawk’s throat long before he even aimed his gun, much less squeezed the trigger. So, no, it wasn’t any form of fear on the wolf’s part.

Hawk actually believed the wolf was trying hard not to scare him.

And, honestly, it truly had been tense that first time Hawk saw Ghost. Hawk had finally been able to bring down a small deer and had dragged it to the cabin where he gutted and cleaned it. There was still snow on the ground, it had been Hawk’s first real kill out there all by himself, and he had not been careful. Young and fucking stupid, his father would say. Not that he really cared anymore for what that asshole had ever thought. Still, the blood trail he left could have been followed by a blind man.

Ghost really had been fierce that day, baring his particularly sharp canines, growling and howling, doing a little dance all around the perimeter as if he would attack at any moment. Except he stuck to the edge of the woods, never coming all the way into the small clearing where the cabin and Hawk were. As nervous as Hawk had been that he had unwelcome company, he eventually went about his business of butchering the deer. If Hawk was going to die, then he would die. But if the wolf let him live, he was going to need the meat. He offered the entrails to the wolf, not that he looked hungry in the least. He just figured if he shared the bounty, he might end the day alive.

And he did.

Hawk wasn’t sure if the wolf ate the offering or not, since he never saw him do it, but the mess was gone the next morning.

When Ghost showed up a few days later, Hawk once again offered him raw meat. This time the wolf sniffed at it, picked it up, seemed to nod in Hawk’s direction, then he loped off into the deep woods.

Huh, Hawk remembered thinking. I just might have made a friend.

For the next several days the wolf continued to visit but stayed to the edge of the woods. He seemed to be watching Hawk’s every move as he chopped wood for the fireplace, did minor repairs on the cabin, and attempted to hunt small game.

Ghost even followed when Hawk checked his traps. Unfortunately, Hawk really had no idea how to be a trapper. And even though he never remembered his father ever using them either, they were hanging in the barn, so Hawk had taken them. The small amount of money he was able to find wouldn’t last long, so trapping and being able to offer animal hides for trade would be his only means of support.

Day after day, the wolf would come and sit at the edge of the forest to the point Hawk searched for him each morning. He would nod in acknowledgement, and the wolf seemed to do the same. Most of the time Hawk would go about his chores of surviving another day in the wilderness but sometimes he would just stand and stare at the wolf. He was simply gorgeous and something amazing to gaze at. Hawk was even finding himself wanting to get closer. What did his fur feel like? Would those shoulders really come to Hawk’s waist? But each time Hawk would try, Ghost would disappear.

After they were well into the third week of the wolf being an off-and-on-again companion, and after yet another disappointing string of empty traps, Hawk stopped and regarded the wolf. He, too, had stopped and was standing about ten feet away, the closest he had ever come.

It was probably just a symptom of his isolation, or maybe he really was as crazy as his old man had kept telling him, but Hawk began to talk to the wolf as if he could understand.

“Well, Ghost, another tripped and empty trap, but not any blood as if it were set off on purpose. It’s almost as if the animals know what this is and how it works. Do you think something like that is possible?”

The wolf only turned to him, cocked his head to the side, and sat.

“I’ll take that as a no.” Hawk chuckled. “I have to tell you, though. This is mighty suspicious. I haven’t gotten anything in my traps. They’ve been like this since I came up here which is a little problematic because that deer I took won’t last forever.”

Ghost chuffed as if in agreement.

“I’ve certainly seen plenty of fox. Maybe you have, too? That tells me there’s game. Hell, these tracks tell me that.” Hawk sighed. “However, I won’t fill my belly by continuing to stare at bare traps.” Hawk shook his head. “But I might just as well pretend they’ll yield something in the future and reset them.”

Which Hawk did. He walked from trap to trap and reset them, being careful to wipe away his scent on each one, even though he wore thick gloves, explaining every detail to the wolf. When he arrived back to his cabin, he turned to see that Ghost had once again stopped at the entrance to the forest.

“Come on. There’s still meat. I’ll share.” Hawk wondered if he stood his ground this time, if he could somehow get next to the wolf. Something in him strongly yearned to simply touch him, look closer into those golden eyes, feel his breath on his face.

Ghost took a step, glanced around quickly before taking a few more. He watched Hawk as he very methodically padded toward him. Hawk’s heart was beating hard. He wasn’t sure what the wolf had in mind. Probably not the same thing Hawk did, although he didn’t think the animal meant him harm. He also didn’t look hungry. But a free meal was a free meal.

Except the wolf stopped and sat about halfway. After a few moments, Hawk smiled. It was clear Ghost wrote his own rules, and Hawk’s desire to be nearer to the large animal was not going to be granted this time. If ever. When it was apparent Ghost was not going to give him another inch, Hawk turned, walked over to the large tin lock box near the front door, undid the lock, reached inside and pulled out another venison slab covered in cloth. He unwrapped it and took unhurried steps toward the wolf, holding the meat out in front of him.

“Like I said, Ghost. This deer was small to begin with and I had to go pretty far into the woods to get it. I’m just lost as to why, even though there seems to be game, I can’t find it in this part of the forest.”

He stopped ten feet from Ghost, keeping his eye on the beautiful animal, then laid the chunk of meat down on the melting snow.

“But no matter. I’ll still share.”

Amazingly, the wolf seemed to chuckle, shaking his head. Hawk couldn’t help but believe Ghost just might have been amazed Hawk had once again given him meat.

Or fucking stupid.

But Ghost still walked up to the offering after Hawk stepped back and sniffed the piece of venison. He had glanced up at Hawk with what Hawk thought looked an awful lot like gratitude. Then he picked up the chunk and trotted back into the woods.

Hawk had been disappointed he hadn’t gotten closer but wondered if indeed the wolf actually understood that Hawk was sharing not from bounty but from poverty.

That thought truly hit home when the next morning there had been two fat rabbits lying on his doorstep. Hawk had quickly scanned the forest’s edge to find the wolf. Sure enough, Ghost had been there watching him. With what he knew had to be shock on his face, Hawk pointed at the rabbits, trying to ask the wolf if he had provided them. The wolf seemed to nod. Then he turned and once again disappeared leaving Hawk to contemplate the fact that the damn wolf looked like he had smiled at him.

Hawk nodded then, too, picking up the unexpected welcome gift. “Thank you,” he called out, hoping the wolf was still within ear shot. Not that he thought Ghost would understand him, but he was getting the impression the wolf comprehended a whole lot more than really should have been possible.

And it made him happy. It meant he was no longer alone.

Anyone who knows me, knows that I enjoy a good shifter story. Now, while Hurri Cosmo has never disappointed me, she gave me something unique this time. Not just A shifter story, but the FIRST shifter story.

Okay, let me start from the beginning.

Hawk is on the run for a crime he didn’t commit. There was an axe. There was a death. There was… Well, the guy deserved it regardless. But Hawk knows the penalty for his crime, and he’d rather not stick around to try and prove his innocence. So he flees the only home he’s ever known–even if it is a shitty one.

He holes up at a cabin, certain he can learn to live off the land. Only…not so much. He’s not inept, but he has no skills. Think city boy tossed into the country and told to survive on his wits alone. Hawk is likely not going to survive the winter. Until a wolf shows up. He’s huge, he’s obviously powerful, and he’s wary of Hawk, who calls him Ghost for his skill at vanishing as though he was never there.

Ghost realizes that he could make a meal out of this human, but… Something, and he’s not sure what, stops him. It’s almost as though he’s drawn to this man and his intoxicating smell. In an effort to make sure Hawk doesn’t die, Ghost does something remarkable. He begins to take care of Hawk. He leaves him food, he keeps away predators, and he cares, but… It’s not enough. Ghost wants more. He wants to be able to touch Hawk, to…something.

Now that we have the basics, let’s get to the review, shall we?

The writing on the story is tight. There were some suspenseful parts, and a few that made me smile (like the epilogue). Hurri has a knack for shifters, and this story in no way disappointed me in the least. I will say one thing here. What I like best is a comment I made back when I reviewed Upon a Once and Future Time, the book she did with Shannon West. Hurri doesn’t make Hawk weak. I very much appreciated that fact.

True, he needs Ghost to protect him, but he also steps up to protect Ghost. He cares for him, he is willing to die for him. How much truer can love get?

If you like shifters, I heartily recommend this story. If you’re a fan of a well-crafted book, but have never tried shifters, why not read the book that shows how shifters came to be?

About the Author
