About The Book

On the night of the full moon, a six-year-old human boy goes missing, and werewolf Alpha Tobias Rogan is blamed. But Kyle Slidell, Tobias’s vegan mate, knows who is truly responsible. Saul Hughes, a former Alpha turned fugitive, has followed his victim Brianna, Tobias and Kyle’s newest packmate, to Boston. Saul will do anything to destroy Tobias, including turning members of Tobias’s own pack against him–and trying to turn Tobias against Kyle.

Immune to Saul’s mind-control power, Kyle locates the child. To rescue the boy and clear Tobias’s name, Kyle disobeys the regional werewolf leader, the Arkhon, and violates shifter law, placing his own life at risk and leaving Saul still on the loose in Boston.

As the full extent of Saul’s crimes and abuse of Brianna comes to light, Kyle works with Tobias and members of the neighboring pack to locate the fugitive. But before they can stop him, Saul takes Brianna captive–and one of them will not survive.

This book was originally published in 2012. This version has been revised, edited, and expanded from the original, with additional content originally published as a separate novel in 2013. This book contains child abduction; references to off-page abuse and sexual assault; violence between werewolves; and depictions of PTSD.

The Review

‘Hummus on Rye’ continues Kyle and Tobias’s story, adding quite a few surprises to the proceedings. Kyle, again, tells the story from his point of view and quite often made me laugh. His description of the “bad guy” sort of sums up the way Kyle thinks: “Saul Hughes, the most homophobic piece of crap ever to reach the rank of Alpha.” With all of Saul’s machinations there is a lot of suspense in this book, resulting in a lot of violence. I would definitely recommend reading this series in order since each book build on what happened previously; also, be warned that this review contains spoilers for the first two books.

Kyle discovers more of his mysterious gifts/talents, and it doesn’t make his life any easier – inside or outside of the pack. As ever, he is determined to do the right thing, never mind pack law, Tobias’s explicit instructions, the instructions from the regional Arkhon, or Kyle’s own safety. I have to admire him for that, but some of his actions did make me hold my breath with the suspense. We also get to see his softer side in this volume in the way he cares for Mikey, a six-year-old human child. Mikey and his father have recently moved into one of the apartment buildings that houses the Boston North pack and they have no idea what they are in for!

Tobias is really in the middle of all the attacks and action – again. There is something about an alpha who does not use draconian rules to keep his pack in check, and powerful wanna-be dictator Saul is one of his most devious enemies. And with Saul’s ability to coerce other werewolves into doing whatever he wants, Tobias has a very hard time fighting back. Luckily, he has learned to listen to Kyle, the one werewolf who doesn’t fall under Saul’s (or anyone else’s) spell.

Kyle and Tobias’s relationship has really grown since they first met. Different from other werewolf worlds, Kyle does not have any special privileges as the Alpha’s mate, and that does bug me. Maybe because I’m just not used to this idea, even three books into the series, or maybe because it adds unnecessary tension (at least in my opinion) to Kyle’s relationship with Tobias. I am wondering if that is ever going to be resolved, especially due to the hints at Kyle’s differences to other werewolves in this world. I cannot wait to see what the author has in store for the next books in this series!

Evil werewolves try to mess everything up for the main characters and their pack, but Kyle keeps fighting for what he thinks is right. A suspenseful story with lots of action.
