About The Book

Jessica Morgan is a gifted profiler. Some might even use the term legendary when speaking of her skills. So much so that the FBI Director takes it upon himself to call her back into service years after a personal tragedy caused her to walk away from the Bureau. Returning with her profiling skills intact and a medical degree, Agent Morgan’s task is to assess the investigation she’s assigned, profile the UNSUB (unknown subject), and deliver the profile to the investigating agents before moving on to the next case. She works tirelessly, relentlessly, and most importantly…alone.

Until now.

The Director pairs Jessica with Dr. Erin Little, a skilled forensic pathologist and an outstanding FBI agent. Erin has earned a favorable reputation during her ten years at the Bureau. Erin’s task force, assigned to find a serial killer dubbed The Slasher by the newspapers, continues to hit dead ends, prompting the Director to ignore Jessica’s rule of working alone. He puts them together, knowing their combined skills are needed to catch The Slasher and bring him to justice. As sparks fly professionally and personally, Jessica and Erin race against time to stop the serial killer before he strikes again.

The Review

This is basically an FBI procedural about catching a serial killer. The lead agents are both women, and end up in a tender relationship.

There are elements of the paranormal too. The story is engrossing, and the killer truly horrible. The writing is technically good, with perfect grammar, vocabulary etc. though at times the author head-hops between the two MCs which can be slightly jarring.

I did feel that the writing was somewhat flat, even when dealing with the frequent erotic, violent or suspenseful scenes. However, I admit to thinking the same about other popular writers, so I don’t think the author needs to worry about my opinion in this respect.

If you enjoy catching serial killers from your armchair with a side helping of romance and the paranormal, you will enjoy this novel!

Four stars.

The Reviewer

I’ve been doing book reviews on my website, crossposted or linked to various social media, for a few years. I read a number of genres but I really enjoy all kinds of speculative fiction so thought I’d like to share my views with you. I love sci fi and other speculative fiction because of the way it can, at its best, make us see ourselves in a new light. Quite apart from the exciting stories, of course! I used to be an English teacher, and I’m a writer (fantasy) so I can be quite critical about style etc. but I hope I can also appreciate properly some books that don’t appeal to me personally but might be simply perfect for others. I have, obviously, read widely, and continue to do so.
