The front door creaked open. The soft patter of footsteps didn’t register in my ears until a large hand ruffled my hair. Such a familiar and effortless touch, like it always was. My heart fluttered just a little.
“Oh—morning, Kai,” I said, looking up and offering him a distracted smile as I pushed my laptop away.
Kaius, or Kai as he preferred, had been part of my life for so long that I barely remembered my life before him. Lani had introduced us when we were kids. Even though he was a few years older, we’d clicked immediately. He never once treated me like I was strange, even when everyone else did.
