The front door creaked open. The soft patter of footsteps didn’t register in my ears until a large hand ruffled my hair. Such a familiar and effortless touch, like it always was. My heart fluttered just a little.
“Oh—morning, Kai,” I said, looking up and offering him a distracted smile as I pushed my laptop away.
Kaius, or Kai as he preferred, had been part of my life for so long that I barely remembered my life before him. Lani had introduced us when we were kids. Even though he was a few years older, we’d clicked immediately. He never once treated me like I was strange, even when everyone else did.
READ MOREAnd then, somewhere along the way, I fell in love with him. I don’t remember when it happened exactly. It wasn’t dramatic or sudden. Instead it was a quiet, steady thing that crept in and made itself at home in my chest. The way his eyes softened when he’d look at me or the way he always showed up when I needed him. He always made me feel like I mattered.
It would’ve been so easy to let myself hope that we could be something more than friends. But Kai’s a Lycan, and Lycans have mates. Fated bonds, these soul-deep connections couldn’t be forced or rivaled. Some day he’d find his, and I’d be happy for him. So I never said anything. Never acted on it. I told myself having him as my best friend was enough and most days, it really was.
