Crash landing on an unfamiliar colony planet is bad. Finding out that women are viewed as property and have no legal rights compounds the problems.
Captain Alisha Kinomoto of the Terran Alliance Marine Corps is used to being in control as a pilot and as a military officer. Being treated as worthless, doesn’t sit well. There is one saving grace of this miserable planet – a beautiful young woman named Tabitha.
As attraction blossoms, an invasion force arrives and only the female population of the colony has a plan for keeping them safe.
The Review
I’ve been a fan of A.R. Moler’s writing for a while, and this short sci-fi story did not disappoint.
Captain Alisha Kinomoto crash lands on a planet that treats women like property. She is basically discarded as worthless, and cared for by other members of society that are considered valueless. There, she meets Tabitha, and together, they’re about to change the world.
I loved everything about this story – from the premise, to the world building, to the characters. Alisha is a kickass Marine, so we expect great things from her. She’s well-trained and combat ready. But when creepy reptilian aliens invade, it turns out the women are the only ones who are prepared to fight, because they’ve been fighting for survival for generations and the men have unwittingly made themselves weak and vulnerable.
This was an excellent short read with great characters, a fast-paced story, and lots of action. I thoroughly enjoyed it. If you haven’t read anything by A.R. Moler before, this will be a fantastic introduction, and you’ll go looking for her backlist because of the quality of the storytelling. If, like me, you’ve enjoyed other stories by this author, you will enjoy this little gem.
