About The Book

You’d think the werewolves would be the worst thing about the Night Shift; you’d be wrong.

All Officer Kit Marlow wanted was a cup of coffee and some downtime before his next night shift. Instead, he got a naked man in the elevator and an unaccounted-for dead girl in the morgue. He’s going to need to deal with both before he can head for his bed.

Or anyone else’s. Although not much chance of that.

Reluctantly partnered with the acerbic security consultant Cade Deacon—last seen naked in the elevator—Marlow delves into the dead girl’s life. Between them, they uncover a new crime scene with the whiff of old corruption. A corruption that, five years ago, nearly took Marlow’s life and ended his career.

Finding out who killed the dead girl on the slab might only be the start of this investigation. Oh, and it’s the second night of the full moon. So 80% of the city, including Cade, will turn into werewolves in the middle of the case.

The Review

Cade Deacon is the rich owner of Cold Winds Security, and a werewolf. He is a tough, bossy, in-control, kind of guy and has a tendency to flirt, especially with Officer Kit Marlow.  But flirt as he may, Marlow and Cade rub each other the wrong way. There’s a downside with being a werewolf – when the moon is in phase, you tend not to remember what happened.

Kit Marlow is an officer for San Diego PD and is a “null.”  Nulls are people who don’t shift to werewolf.  As an officer of the law and a null, his hours are already long, and now he has to work the Night Shift.  It’s definitely difficult because regardless what a werewolf does, no harm is supposed to come to them.

When a young actress with troubles is found murdered, Marlow is commanded to work with Cade on the murder.  They discover the crime was committed at one of Cade’s biggest client’s residence at the Reserve. Cade also has to face the fact that his security company may not be up to par.

Marlow has to deal with the past as it comes back to haunt him.

In the end, it all comes down to Marlow and Cade joining forces and getting the twisted murder resolved.

T.A. Moore brings us a different type of werewolf world building, without a lot of focus on the wolf shifters/shifting. Instead, the story revolves around the gruesome murder’s investigation and Marlow’s and Cade’s backgrounds and pasts. These two characters bring lots of snark, humor, and a few serious moments to this novel. I liked the introduction of Cade’s younger brother Lem, who works for Cold Winds Security and gives Cade a hard time.  Lem is a fun character, and I hope to see a lot more of him in this new series.

I don’t want to give away too much, but this is worth the read and has great potential as a new shifter/paranormal series!  TA Moore has created a great mystery here – an interesting investigation, fast paced action, snark, suspense, and gore, and I hope it will be a successful new series.  “Shift Work” is just what I like, and what a smashing ending! Bring on book two!

The Reviewer

Hi, I’m Maryann, I started life in New York, moved to New Hampshire and in 1965 uprooted again to Sacramento, California.  Once I retired I moved to West Palm Beach, Florida in 2011 and just moved back to Sacramento in March of 2018.  My son, his wife and step-daughter flew out to Florida and we road tripped back so they got to see sights they have never seen.  New Orleans and the Grand Canyon were the highlights. Now I am back on the west coast again to stay! From a young age Ialways liked to read.

I remember going to the library and reading the “Doctor Dolittle” books by Hugh Lofting. Much later on became a big fan of the classics, Edgar Alan Poe, Mary Shelley, Bram Stoker and as time went by Agatha Christie, Ray Bradbury and Stephen Kingand many other authors.

My first M/M shifter book I read was written by Jan Irving the “Uncommon Cowboys” series from 2012.  She was the first author I ever contacted and sent an email to letting her know how much I liked this series.  Sometime along the way I read “Zero to the Bone”by Jane Seville, I think just about everyone has read this book!

As it stands right now I’m really into mysteries, grit, gore and “triggers” don’t bother me. But if a blurb piques my interest I will read the book.

My kindle collection eclectic and over three thousand books and my Audible collection is slowly growing.  I have both the kindle and audible apps on my ipod, ipads, and MAC. So there is never an excuse not to be listening or reading.

I joined Goodreads around 2012 and started posting reviews.  One day a wonderful lady, Lisa Horan of The Novel Approach, sent me an email to see if I wanted to join her review group.  Joining her site was such an eye opener.  I got introduce to so many new authors that write for the LGBTQ genre. Needless to say, it was heart breaking when it ended.

But I found a really great site, QRI and it’s right here in Sacramento. Last year at QSAC I actually got to meet Scott Coatsworth, Amy Lane and Jeff Adams.
