He came for the job. He left owned.

Alex Mercer was supposed to be untouchable: the golden heir to his family's powerful law firm in Los Angeles, two years of associate experience under his belt, dispatched to Las Vegas to bring the chaotic Global Combat League to heel.

Instead, he met Jack Doyle.

Compact. Battle-hardened. Close-cropped dark hair just beginning to gray. The cold, calculating stare of a man who built an empire from nothing and never learned how to lose. One command from across the desk and Alex's perfectly tailored world began to unravel — jacket, tie, shirt — every step an exit offered and refused, every refusal a choice Alex made with open eyes.

What started as an interview ended with Alex stripped bare on Jack's desk, claimed so thoroughly he could still feel it weeks later. What started as a contract became something neither of them had a name for. And what started in Las Vegas wasn't going to stay there.

Some men break you. Jack owned him. And the worst part? Alex let him.

A dark MM romance about power, possession, and the cost of being chosen by a man who doesn't share what he claims.

Book One in the Global Combat League trilogy.

CHAPTER ONE

———

Jack Doyle doesn't hire lawyers. He owns them. Don't fuck this up.

That was the directive Alex Mercer carried into the Global Combat League building on the edge of Las Vegas at 2:17 p.m. on a Tuesday afternoon in July 2012.

The building was a converted warehouse, and it had never entirely stopped being one. The training cages on the lower level and the administrative operation above it occupied the same shell, two realities of the league seeping into each other through shared walls and ventilation. You could smell it in the lobby: blood and coffee, faintly, the metallic undertone beneath the climate-controlled air. Alex noted it the way he noted everything: the sound of something impacting something else two floors below, the posters of fighters lining the corridor, each one caught at the precise moment of maximum controlled violence. He had been in many offices. He had not been in one like this.

He looked exactly like what he was: thirty years old, two years into his associate position at Mercer & Associates, freshly sworn into the Nevada bar, the golden-boy associate from his father's white-shoe firm, sent to handle the league's personal needs. Charcoal suit tailored to perfection, white dress shirt crisp enough to cut glass, navy tie knotted with military precision. Dark hair swept back from a clean-shaven face, sharp cheekbones, and a lean, athletic build.

Alex had filed his father's directive under "information received" and not under "information that will alter my conduct" because his conduct was already what it was going to be, and Richard's directives, however accurate, were rarely new. He walked to the elevator. He pressed the button for the third floor. He waited.

The door opened, and he went in.

Jack Doyle was sitting behind a desk that had no business being in a modern building. Massive oak, not selected from a catalog but found somewhere and brought here through sheer force of will. A half-empty bottle of Jameson sat within easy reach on the left side. The GCL championship watch on his left wrist caught the overhead light as he turned a page of whatever he was reading, unhurried, not looking up.

He was forty-five. Five-ten, which was shorter than Alex had expected from the photographs, but the compactness of him was the first thing you recalibrated because what you had expected was height and what you got instead was density, a body built from necessity rather than vanity, muscle accumulated over years of physicality that had not been recreational. Close-cropped dark hair, more salt in it than the photographs had shown, kept with the same ruthless precision as everything else about him. Strong jaw. It was a face shaped by events rather than genetics, each feature slightly harder than a different history would have left it. His arms were veined and still under the sleeves of the black GCL polo, and his hands on the page were the hands of a man who had used them for things other than paperwork.

He did not stand when Alex came in. He did not offer a hand. He finished the paragraph he was reading and then looked up and let the silence sit for long enough to be deliberate.

"Close the door all the way," he said. "Sit."

His voice was Boston in the way that meant not the university or the financial district but somewhere considerably further south and east of those things. Alex closed the door. He sat. The chair had been positioned slightly lower than the desk, which was power move number one and which Alex clocked and filed without adjusting his posture, because the adjustment would have been its own kind of concession.

Jack studied him the way a promoter studied a fighter on the scale: unhurried, methodical, not looking for what was there so much as what wasn't. Alex held still and let himself be read. He had been read by difficult people before. He was good at being read.

"Kid," Jack said. "You any good at not fucking up?"

Alex registered the question for what it was, not the interview he had prepared for, but the one underneath it, the one that wanted to know whether he was going to give a law school answer or an honest one. He had prepared the law school answer on the flight. He looked at Jack and set it aside.

"Depends on the definition," Alex said. Then he looked at Jack and reconsidered. "Yes, sir."

Jack's mouth curved into something that wasn't quite a smile. "Sir. I like that. Most of these Ivy League pricks walk in here calling me Jack like we're old pals." He held the look. "What does 'yes' mean to you?"

"It means you tell me what's coming before it arrives, I keep it from becoming a problem. You call me after it's already a problem, I make it go away." He held Jack's eyes. "Either way works. I'd rather the first."

Jack regarded him for a moment. Then he set down what he was reading and leaned back.

"Marco says you're good," he said. "That means something, coming from him. I know your father. I know his firm. They've been handling my contracts for three years." He picked up his mug and took a drink. "If you're even half the lawyer Richard is, you're worth the conversation."

"I'm not my father," Alex said. No edge to it. Just fact. "But I can do the job."

Jack looked at him with the full quality of attention he would come to understand was Jack's primary mode: complete, unhurried, costing the subject of it nothing and requiring everything. "Just like that?"

"Just like that," Alex said.

Jack almost smiled. He set the mug down and leaned forward, elbows on the desk.

"Alexander Mercer. Thirty. Top of your class at USC Law. You know why you're here?"

"My father said you needed a personal attorney. Available at all hours. Fighter issues, sponsorship conflicts, anything that doesn't go through the league office."

"That's the version that goes on paper." Jack tapped the desk once with two fingers. "Off paper it's simpler. You work for me. The league, the fighters, your old man --- none of them own you. I do. I snap my fingers at three in the morning because some idiot heavyweight punched a casino bouncer, you're already in a car. I need an NDA before breakfast because one of my champions knocked up a ring-girl, you're already writing it. You breathe when I say breathe. You eat when I say eat. You exist for the GCL. The GCL is me. I need someone I can trust completely to have my back. Not the league's back. Mine." He let that land. "You want this job, Mercer?"

Alex had known, somewhere on the flight over, that he wanted it. Not only the money, though the money was real. It was the room he was sitting in. The building below, with its blood smell and its training cages. The man across the desk, who had not yet said a single thing that was anything other than exactly what he meant. Alex had spent two years in an environment that prided itself on precision and had not yet been in a room where precision was this unconcerned with its own appearance.

"Yes, sir," he said. "I want the job."

Jack's eyes narrowed, dark and unreadable. He let the words hang in the air for a long ten seconds, the air conditioner droning in the background. Then he smiled, slow and predatory, a smile that had closed million-dollar deals and ended careers in the same breath.

"Good," Jack said. "Then you're going to prove it."

The shift in the room was immediate, like the temperature had dropped ten degrees. Alex's mouth went dry. He'd expected a hard interview. Maybe some locker-room hazing. Not... this. Whatever this was.

Jack stood up. He came around the desk, without announcement, without the excess of motion that would have signaled awareness of being watched. He stopped three feet away and crossed his arms and looked at Alex the way he had been looking at him since Alex walked in, which was completely and without apology.

"Take off your jacket."

Alex blinked. Once. His heart slammed against his ribs like it wanted out. Not standard. A line. A test. The kind powerful men drew in the sand to see who'd cross it and who'd run.

Jack's voice stayed even, almost conversational, but there was steel underneath. "You heard me. Jacket. Off. Or you can stand up right now, walk out that door, tell your Daddy I'm a crazy prick, and we'll both pretend this meeting never happened. Your call, kid. Last chance to keep your suit clean and your dignity intact."

Alex's pulse adjusted. He did not let it show. He held Jack's gaze for a moment --- long enough to make it clear the beat was deliberate and not hesitation --- and then stood and unbuttoned the single button and slid the jacket off and folded it over the back of the chair with the same precision he had brought to everything else. The cool air hit his arms through the shirt.

Jack didn't move. "Tie."

Alex reached up and loosened the knot and pulled the silk free and laid it on top of the jacket. His hands were steady. He was aware that this was an interview of a different kind than the one he had prepared for, and he was aware that he was not preparing to walk out, and he was aware that both of those things were true simultaneously and that the awareness of them did not constitute alarm.

"Shirt."

Jack's eyes tracked every movement. Alex unbuttoned the cuffs first. Then the front, one button at a time, not rushing, not performing the not-rushing. The fabric parted to reveal smooth, pale skin, the faint definition of his abs from weekend workouts, the dark trail of hair running down from his navel. His nipples tightened in the chill. When he shrugged the shirt off and folded it onto the pile, his chest was bare, and Jack looked at him without saying anything.

"You still want the job?" Jack's voice was lower now, not softer. He circled Alex once, slow, like a shark. A faint scar ran along the left side of his head from some old fight. "Say the word, and this stops. Door's unlocked. No hard feelings. You walk out a regular lawyer. Or you keep going and prove you belong to me."

Alex looked at him and swallowed hard. His cock was already stirring in his trousers. He looked at the door and then back at Jack and understood the question and understood that it was genuine and understood that the door being unlocked was not a detail. Jack was not a man who offered exits he didn't mean.

"I still want the job," he said.

What followed was produced in Alex a quality of attention to the present that he had not previously understood was available. It was not, he thought afterward, that he had not wanted things before. He had wanted them. He had wanted the law and the precision of it and the way a well-constructed argument closed around a problem like a fist. He had wanted those things the way you wanted things inside Richard's architecture: correctly, proportionally, in ways that served a purpose he had been given rather than found.

This was not that.

"Pants."

The command landed like a hook to the gut. Alex's hands moved to his belt. The buckle clinked---loud in the quiet room. He unfastened it, slid the leather free, then popped the button on his trousers. The zipper rasped down. He pushed the fabric over his hips, revealing black boxer-briefs that clung to the growing bulge at the front and the firm curve of his ass. The trousers pooled at his ankles; he stepped out and folded them perfectly.

Jack stopped circling. He was close enough now that Alex could smell the faint scent of his aftershave, something woodsy and expensive, and the clean sweat of a man who'd already put in a full day. "Underwear."

Alex's breath caught. He was rock-hard now, the thick length straining against the black fabric, the head outlined clearly. His face burned, but he didn't look away.

Jack's voice dropped to a dangerous murmur. "Last out, Mercer. You drop those shorts, and you're mine. No take-backs. No pretending this was just a weird interview. You'll be bent over that desk with my cock so deep in your ass you'll feel it for a week. You want the job that bad? Prove it. Or walk."

The tension in the room was a living thing, thick enough to choke on. Alex's mind raced---images of the life waiting outside this door, the safe path, the respectable career. But beneath it was something darker, hungrier. The pull of submission. The thrill of being claimed by a man who built empires with his bare hands.

He hooked his thumbs into the waistband of his boxer-briefs and pushed them down in one smooth motion. His cock sprang free---thick, heavy, seven inches of flushed, uncircumcised meat, the foreskin still mostly covering the sensitive head, a bead of pre-cum already glistening at the slit. His balls sat high and tight. He stepped clear and stood completely naked, hands at his sides, chest rising and falling.

Jack let the silence stretch for what felt like minutes. His eyes raked over Alex's body---shoulders, chest, the flat stomach, the hard cock twitching under scrutiny, the smooth thighs. "Jesus fucking Christ," he muttered, almost reverent. "Look at you. Pretty little lawyer, standing here with your dick out like you were born for this." He stepped closer, one hand coming up to grip Alex's jaw, tilting his face down to meet his own. "You're shaking. Good. Means you know exactly what this is."

Alex's voice was barely above a whisper. "I know."

Jack's thumb brushed his lower lip. "Turn around. Bend over the desk. Hands flat on the wood. Ass up."

Alex did as he was told. The oak was cool against his palms, papers crinkling under his chest as he folded forward. His cock dragged against the edge of the desk, sending sparks up his spine. His ass arched high, exposed, vulnerable. He heard the heavy sound of Jack's belt unbuckling behind him, the zipper, the rustle of fabric. A drawer opened. The snap of a lube bottle.

Jack's palm settled on the small of Alex's back---warm, heavy, possessive. "You can still say stop. Right now. I'll let you dress and walk. But once I'm inside you, there's no going back. You'll be my guy. My lawyer. My fucking property when I need you to be. You understand what you're signing up for?"

Alex's fingers curled against the desk. "I understand."

Jack's thick finger, slick with lube, pressed against his hole---circling, teasing, then pushing in slow. Alex gasped, the stretch burning sweet. "Tight," Jack growled. "You ever take a man like me before? Or am I popping this cherry today?"

"Never... like this," Alex admitted, voice strained.

Another finger joined the first, scissoring, opening him up with clinical efficiency. Jack's free hand gripped Alex's hip, holding him steady. "Good boy. Taking it so well already. Most guys would've bolted by the tie. You? You're still here, hard as a fucking rock, dripping all over my desk."

The fingers withdrew. Alex felt the blunt, slick head of Jack's cock, thicker than he expected, hot as a brand, press against his entrance. Jack leaned over him, chest to back, forehead brushing Alex's shoulder. "No going back from this one, Mercer. Say no, and this ends. Say yes, and I own every inch of you."

Alex pushed back, just enough to feel the head breach him. "Yes."

Jack groaned. Deep, guttural, pure triumph. He thrust forward in one long stroke.

The burn was immediate. Overwhelming.

Alex's mouth fell open in a silent cry. Jack buried to the hilt. Hips flush. Balls heavy against him.

"Fuck," Jack hissed. "So goddamn tight. Like you were made for my cock."

He pulled back almost all the way. Slammed in again. The desk rocked forward an inch. The rhythm set itself.

Each thrust dragged against Alex's prostate, sending white-hot pleasure shooting up his spine. His own cock leaked steadily onto the wood, untouched. Jack's hand fisted in Alex's dark hair, yanking his head back just enough to growl in his ear. "This is what the job is, kid. Me owning you. Me using you. You bend, you take it, you thank me after. Got it?"

"Yes---fuck---yes, sir," Alex choked out, the honorific slipping out naturally now.

Jack's pace quickened, the wet slap of skin on skin echoing obscenely. His free hand reached around, wrapping around Alex's aching cock---palm stroking the foreskin back and forth over the sensitive head in perfect counterpoint to his thrusts. "Look at this pretty uncut dick. Leaking for me already. You love it, don't you? Love getting fucked like a whore in your first interview."

Alex's moans grew louder, broken. The power dynamic was absolute---Jack fully dressed except for his open fly, Alex naked and bent and taking every inch like it was his purpose. Jack fucked him harder, deeper, the desk creaking in protest. "Mine now," he snarled. "Not your Daddy's firm. Not the bar. Mine. Say it."

"I'm yours," Alex gasped, the words torn from him as his orgasm built like a freight train. "Fuck---Jack---I'm yours."

Jack's strokes on his cock sped up. "Come for me, then. Show me how bad you want this job."

Alex shattered. He came with a strangled cry. Cum spilled across the desk and Jack's fist. His hole clenched rhythmically around the older man's cock.

Jack followed. A low roar against Alex's back. He buried to the root and flooded Alex with hot, pulsing spurts.

For a long moment, neither moved. Jack stayed fully seated, both of them breathing ragged. Then he eased out carefully, a trickle of cum following. He grabbed a clean white towel from a cabinet, clearly stocked for exactly this, and wiped Alex down with surprising tenderness: first his ass, then his spent cock, then his thighs.

Afterward, Jack pulled him into the leather chair, Jack's chair, the oversized one behind the desk, and settled Alex sideways against his chest. The leather was cool against the bare backs of Alex's thighs. His skin was still slick where it pressed against Jack's polo, the cotton damp now from him. His hole clenched once around the absence of Jack, surprised to find nothing there, and cum trickled warm down the inside of his thigh and pooled where the back of his leg met the chair. He could smell himself on Jack's hand at his temple. He could smell Jack on his own throat. His cock lay soft and sticky against his stomach, sensitive in a way that registered every shift of his body against the leather. Jack's arm settled across him. Alex let himself be held. He was surprised to find he knew how. He had not known, until this configuration, that he knew how.

"You did good," Jack said. His mouth was at Alex's temple, his voice low, not for the room. "Most men would have cracked at the shirt. You went all the way. That's why I wanted you." He pulled back just enough to look at Alex. His thumb moved across Alex's cheek: there had been a tear there, not a choice, just a fact, the body doing what it did when it had been breached. Jack didn't remark on it. He said: "Aftercare's part of the deal. I break you, I put you back together. Always."

Alex looked at him. Thirty years old, two years inside Richard Mercer's very specific theory of what a person ought to be, and he was in Jack Doyle's leather chair being told that the putting-back-together was also the job. He felt the words land somewhere the professional architecture did not cover.

Alex leaned into the touch, the possessiveness wrapping around him like a second skin. The tension of the last hour drained away, replaced by a bone-deep loyalty that felt more real than anything he'd ever signed. "Thank you," he said. "For... everything." It was not the comprehensive response the moment perhaps warranted. It was the honest one.

Jack's arm tightened around him slightly. He held him without moving. Alex was aware of Jack's breathing, the quiet in the office, the city outside doing whatever it was doing in the way cities did, indifferent, continuous, entirely unconcerned with the fact of two people in a leather chair above it. He was aware of something that had been wound very tight for a very long time coming loose in increments he could not have predicted and would not have asked for, and was not, he found, going to resist.

His eyes closed. He didn't decide to close them. They simply did.

He slept.

The first thing he registered when he surfaced was the absence.

It was not cold or uncomfortable. He was simply alone. He was still in the leather chair, but Jack was gone. A blanket had been placed around him at some point while he slept; he registered this before he registered anything else, the fact of a blanket that had not been there when he closed his eyes. The overhead light was off. The lamp on the credenza threw the office in amber.

He blinked. Sat up slowly. His body ached in ways that were new and sharp. He found his reading glasses on the desk, taken from his jacket pocket and folded neatly beside the pile of his clothes. He reached for them first. The world sharpened into focus.

That was when he saw the folder.

Manila. Perfectly centered on the polished oak, oriented toward him. Deliberate. And beside it, placed with the same quiet precision, a glass of water and two tablets.

Alex looked at the glass of water for a moment before he looked at the folder. The blanket placed while he slept. The light dimmed. The glass of water. He was aware of what it meant for a man like Jack Doyle to have done these things without witness and without expectation of acknowledgment. He picked up the glass and the tablets, popped the pills in his mouth, and drank. The ache in his ass was low, but satisfying. Then he reached for the folder.

He opened it.

It took approximately three seconds for the full weight of the document to register. He read it again from the beginning to make sure he had read it correctly. He had.

Personal attorney. Direct report to Jack Doyle. Full operational authority over GCL legal. A team of in-house attorneys operating under his direction.

The compensation structure on the second page made the verbal offer from earlier look like a placeholder. The equity provisions were not something you put together in forty-five minutes. The framework for the legal team was fully built, fully staffed on paper, waiting only for the person at the top of it.

Alex set the folder on his lap and looked at the amber light on the ceiling and ran the timeline. Jack had known his name before the meeting. He had known Marco's recommendation was coming. He had known his father's firm and the three years of contract work and the Nevada bar admission date. He had had this contract drawn up and waiting before Alex Mercer had walked through the door.

None of this had been improvised. None of it had ever been improvised.

He heard the door.

Jack came in without ceremony and poured two fingers of Jameson. He leaned against the desk with his glass and looked at Alex in the chair with the folder in his lap and waited.

Alex looked at the folder. Then at Jack.

"You had this drawn up before I walked in," he said. Not an accusation. The same tone he used when laying out the facts of a situation. Clean, precise, almost clinical. "The compensation structure, the equity terms, the team allocation. That's not something you put together in forty-five minutes." He paused. "You knew Marco was going to recommend me. You knew my father's firm. You had this ready before you ever asked me to sit down."

Jack said nothing. He drank his Jameson and let Alex finish the observation.

"I'm not saying that's a problem," Alex said. "I'm saying I see it."

A beat. He looked at the folder.

"I was never going to say no, Jack." The words came out quieter than he intended. He heard it and didn't recalibrate. "The terms are clean. The structure works. You built it so there's nothing to negotiate, which is either the smartest thing you've done today or the most arrogant."

Something moved at the corner of Jack's mouth.

"But I'm not signing it because you left it on a desk while I was asleep," Alex said. "I'm signing it because I looked at every clause, I understand exactly what you're asking, and I'm choosing this."

He reached for the pen sitting beside the folder: Jack's pen, heavy, the kind that cost more than it needed to. He opened the contract to the signature page and held the pen for a moment without writing.

Then he looked up at Jack one more time.

"You said you need someone you can trust completely to have your back," Alex said. He held the eye contact without effort. "That's what you're getting. All of it. Every version of it."

There was weight behind that last part. More than professional. He let it exist without explaining it.

Then he signed. Clean, decisive, one motion. He set the pen down on the closed folder and looked up.

"Welcome to the GCL, Mercer," Jack said. He extended his hand. Alex shook it and felt the quality of a handshake from a man who understood what handshakes meant. "You're mine now. I don't let go easy."

"I'm yours," Alex said. He said it the way you said true things when the honesty had arrived ahead of the decision to be honest. Not performing it. Just saying it because it was accurate and because this room had been, from the moment he walked in, a room where the accurate thing was the only thing worth saying.

Wonder Boy: Owned, Book 1 of the Global Combat League series by Calan Mercer, is the author's debut novel and honestly it was fantastic. If you like Dark MM romance this is a book for you. Dominance, submission, control. It is a fabulous story and I can't recommend it enough.

Alexander Mercer the wonder boy, Jack Doyle built the GCA from nothing, and Richard Mercer, Alexander's father. These three men will make you laugh, cry, frustrated, angry, and aroused. This is masterfully written and it packs a mean punch in all the right places. The encounters are frequent and steamy. They will definitely inspire you and you may want to reread them.

I received this as an advanced readers copy through StoryOrigin for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This is an intense queer fiction with themes of romance, scandals, business deals, and emotional closures. It explores a salacious employee-employer relationship between the Mercer & Associates heir, Alex Mercer, and the military-style fight promoter and Global Combat League’s CEO, Jack Doyle, which gives rise to a strain in their two business partnerships, parental issues, and a therapeutic insight into deeper connections and trauma. Alex’s father will do anything to prevent the two from ever meeting again, but what does fate have in store for them? For readers who love queer romance involving power dynamics and incredible emotional intensity, this is the right book for you!

First half of this book is incredible. 5 stars.
It starts to become a page filler in the second half and ends differently than how you'd expect. 3.5 stars

Alex has great character development. The chemistry and bond he has with Jack is great to read. You start loosing hope in the 4 years that his father gets a hold of him and turns him into a legal force to be reckoned with and he loses himself in the role to forget.

overall great read.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Normally I would start by blabbing about the book. However, I feel like this book needs me to say that it's for adults eighteen and older or it will ruin you mentally. Having BDSM, obsession, and an age gap, I didn't know what I was getting into.

Alex Mercer didn’t grow up around a loving family. All he knows is how to be a lawyer, and he is great at it; after all, he is the golden boy of Mercer & Associates. Structured and poised, undone by Jack Doyle, owner of CGL. A sub and dom relationship forms between the two as they work together. However, all good things come to an end except their unwavering attraction towards each other. Mine and yours said in the night, lost in the vastness of the space between them.

Calan Mercer develops this book, creating it into a power play of both relationships and the corporate world. Being my first MM romance, I am still not sure how to feel. The author vividly explains the book's details, curating it into a masterpiece. I, however, felt like some places were more like space holders, as it was repetitive. I, however, understand it maybe from a point of showing the depth of the relationship. As a reader you don’t shy away from queer romance with a strong emotional arc; this is for you.
