I was a child when enemies destroyed our clan.

My mother escaped and raised me in secret. Without my fathers' blood, she aged and died. Now I am the last head of Clan Lună. My enemies think I am dead, my clan is scattered to the winds, and I am just coming into my powers. I will claim my birthright, rebuild my clan, and destroy our enemies. I'm just going to need a bit of help.

Luckily I know where to find it. A hot team of human mercenaries specializing in security is looking for their next job. They're exactly what I need. Now I just need to convince them to believe me, keep my secrets, and rain hell on my enemies.

And if Lună is still watching out for me, maybe I'll finally get laid.

The Last Lady of Lună is a slow burn paranormal romance and the first in a series about Natalia of the Lună vampires, her five mates, and the future they will build together. Contains FF, MM, and FMF relationships. No AI.

This is an ARC review for Last Lady of Lună by Jess Mahler, Volume 1 of Clan Lună.

I am going to start with the easy part: I really enjoyed this story, and I will be keeping any eye out for the next volumes as well. I felt a bit teased, and look forward to satisfaction.

Now for more details: I knew going into this, that Last Lady is a novella, but the story feels a bit short, a bit rushed at times. More like the recap of the story, than the story itself, or a prologue. Particularly there is a moment in the middle and most of the end feel very rushed, when I really would have liked some time to linger with the characters more. I enjoy their interactions, and the slow-burn tensions could have been a little longer if slow-burn was a goal. You could tell me this was Volume 0.5 and I would say that was fair.

The other stumbling block I had was some of the internal monologue certain characters had about their lust/attractions for each other. It never felt squick, or demeaning or distasteful, but still off for me. There is a nonzero chance this is personal taste, so YMMV with this one. I like sexy stories, but this is not the only time this has happened to me.

I don't do ratings very well, but I will end with this: Do I want to read more from this author, about these characters? Yes. Yes I do.

About the Author

Jess' weird fish-out-of-water life has left them with an enduring love/hate affair with common tropes. The relationship counselor recommended they break it off, but they just keeps coming back to play with tropes (and fuck them up) some more.

In between their tropic indulgences, they write queer fantasy with aromantic, neurodivergent, and generally 'weird' characters, take care of their family, argue halakha, and try to do a bit of educational activism on the side.

They're active on Tumblr, Mastodon, and a few other spots around the web.
