I ran away when I was sixteen. My dad was a complete homophobic, asshole, jarhead cop who could get away with beating the shit out of his kid. I don’t know about my mom—can’t remember her being an active participant in the household since I was a little kid. I had eventually said fuck it and left.

I had to save money and run far to get away from his reach. I succeeded. I went to the city and started a life. I had very few friends and spent most holidays alone. The first few years were the hardest. I stayed in shelters, mostly. It’s hard when you’re a minor, but when I hit eighteen, everything changed. I got my GED and enrolled in a nice college with housing. I was just getting my life going. It was lonely, but it was mine.
