Lover Before Time: Lucifer and Gabriels Story

by Lisa Oliver

Lucifer and Gabriel - Lisa Oliver - Balance Series
Part of the Balance Series series:
Editions:Kindle
Pages: 152

Lucifer, Prince of Darkness, lord of absolutely everything in the Underworld, woke from a coma with the nagging idea that Gabriel had somehow betrayed him. The annoying thing was, he didn't know how or why. The one thing he was certain of was that he couldn't have Gabriel around if he couldn't trust him... or could he?

Archangel Gabriel is shattered. After suffering while Lucifer had been in his coma, he'd thought things would all return to normal once the Prince of Darkness woke up. To be confronted with the one being who'd been in his life since the beginning of time and being told to leave shook Gabriel to the core and made him question everything he'd ever known or been told. He understood - he knew how soul destroying being betrayed could be. But without Lucifer in his life, what did he have left to exist for.

Betrayals, interventions from angels and demons alike, repressed memories and the mists of time all push Lucifer and Gabriel to find the answers, but how will they deal with the fallout once the truth is revealed? After so much work by the five previous couples, will the Master's plan fall at the last hurdle.

After watching Lucifer and Gabriel dance around each other for the previous five books, Love Before Time is their story and the sixth and final book in the Balance series. It is not a standalone. This is an MM romance story intended for adults only. Please store your titles responsibly.

Lucifer smiled as he nodded, but felt a bitter snake of a memory crawl up from his belly.

“Where have I heard that before,” he said, more to himself than to his caregiver.

“Hmm?” Gabriel said, his nose already back in his book. “Heard what?”

Best to let it go and move on,” he repeated, chewing on the words as he tried to find the source of the memory.

“I don’t know,” the archangel said. “Not an entirely uncommon phrase to say. You could have heard it any number of times.”

Lucifer swung his legs around and stood up, his bare ass peaking out of the hospital gown Raphael insisted he wear.

You said it,” Lucifer spoke with a sudden, vital urgency. “To me.”

Gabriel looked up again, his frustration at being constantly interrupted starting to show now. “Entirely possible,” he said, then added. “You look considerably better all of a sudden.”

“Those were among your first words to me after all that shit went down with Head Office. After I was banished and fell so low. Best to let it go, you said. And move on.”

Gabriel could sense the tension mounting in the room. “Maybe. Honestly, Luke, I don’t recall.”

“Well I fucking do,” Lucifer snapped back. “I recall it all now. Seeing Malphas is bringing that whole forgotten puzzle back to me. Piece by shit-stained piece.”

“Oh for fuck’s sake,” Gabriel said as he stood up. “Do you want to tell me what’s going on? I have no idea what you’re talking about, or why you’re so upset.

“Because you’re still in the blissful state of denial,” the devil replied. “A luxury I no longer have access to.”

Gabriel was beginning to lose his cool. “Denial? Denial of what? One minute you can’t reach a fucking glass of water without me holding your hand, and the next you’re standing like a resurrected king, accusing me of saying something completely innocuous once upon a time. Maybe the drugs have caused you to have a stroke or aneurysm of some kind. A cyst on your brain tissue, perhaps? I don’t know.”

“My brain is just fine, Gabriel. It’s yours that isn’t functioning properly.”

Gabriel pursed his lips and tucked the book under his arm. “Well then. You seem to be doing fine enough now. No need for me to stay here and be insulted.”

As he walked briskly to the door, Lucifer’s voice cut him deep and stopped him in his tracks.

“I loved you, Gabriel,” the Prince of Darkness cried. “All that light back then. It was all for you. I loved you more than existence, more than I loved the Almighty Himself, and you broke my heart.”

“I broke your heart? What did I do? You’re the one who defied Head Office and refused to follow the Great Commandment. I, at least, took pity on you and sought you out after the fall. No one else came to visit I seem to recall.”

“You lied to me,” Lucifer bellowed, his voice cracking with raw emotion. “I’ve buried that memory so deeply, but now I see it clear as day. You betrayed me. You betrayed my love. We had a promise and you broke it, Gabriel. And by doing so, you broke my heart.”

“Luke,” Gabriel said with unmistakable compassion in his voice. “I don’t know what you’re talking about, but I can see it’s hurting you terribly. Let me help you. I hate to see you in such pain.”

Lucifer stood to his full height, and opened his mouth in reply. He was more shocked than anyone to find the words that came out were the same as those spoken to him by the Almighty on that dark and terrible day.

“Get out of my sight!”

Gabriel was struck by Lucifer’s commandment - stricken, in fact - knowing the full weight of the phrase better than anyone. He wasn’t going to let his emotions show under any circumstances.

He left Lucifer’s office quickly, before the tears came.
