Liam is fourteen. Until lately, he's been happy. No one understands the change. His parents are worried. His teachers have given up. His friends are dropping him one by one. No longer interested in the world, he spends his time plugged in and shut off. But he does what he's told and answers when spoken to, while sinking into the lowest profile he can find.

After several interventions, all unsuccesful, his mother has an idea. Why not send him to spend the summer with her two favorite uncles? The trip will be long. He'll be going alone. But she hopes that the new surroundings will help him break out of his shell. They call it a vacation, but it's really a last resort.

The story starts here. Happy in their lives, Bill and Anton welcome Liam into their home, ready to do anything for him, but unprepared for how difficult that turns out to be. Because Liam has a secret that can't be shared because even he doesn't know what it is. But Bill persists. Aided by a band of joyful teens, he digs deep into the mystery

This loose addition to the Pierre & Bill series is a standalone story. If you've read the other Pierre & Bill novels, the opening will be familiar. But if you haven't, you won't miss a thing because the story goes elsewhere fast. Prior knowledge isn't required to get caught up in the journey to the heart of a boy.

Excerpt:

"Oh!" Bill said as if he'd forgotten. "By the way, this is Liam." Wanting to call him his nephew, which he felt him to be, but unsure how Liam would react, Bill settled with the facts. "He's here on vacation. He's from England."

With an appraising look, Tisha smiled, Anthony said "Hey," and Joey held out his fist. For a moment, Bill's heart sank. Now wasn't the time for an awkward moment. But like a pro, Liam held out his fist and with the greatest of ease, bumped it against Joey's.

"Hey," he said with a glance at all three.

Just then, the waitress appeared, but before she could speak, Tisha waved her away. "Nothing, thanks. We're just visiting." Ignoring the woman's deadly stare, she leaned forward and let her bracelets slap the table. "So, say something in English."

With a glance over at Bill, Liam looked profoundly confused. But if he thought Bill could help him, he was wrong. Bill was just as lost.

Looking rather desperate, Liam eyed her. "What do you mean?"

"Oh!" she squealed with a look around the table. "Don't you just love it?"

"What?" Liam asked.

"Your accent! Sounds very high end. Are you high end? I mean noble and all that."

Then, as if being tickled, Liam sputtered a giggle. "Me? Not a chance. I'm just a regular bloke."

"He's a bloke!" Tisha cried. "How cool is that?"

"Pretty cool," Joey said. "So, say something else."

Looking intrigued, Liam raised his eyebrows. "Like what?"

"I don't know." Looking out the window for inspiration, Joey nodded. "Okay. What do you call a truck?"

Liam shrugged. "A lorry."

"A lorry!" Tisha gushed. "So cute!"

Pushing back his long black braids, Anthony leaned in. "Ever seen the queen?"

Liam's eyes went large. "Uh, she's dead?"

"I know that." Anthony sounded frustrated. He often did. "I mean before."

"Well, I saw her on the telly."

"The telly!" Tisha cried and they all roared with laughter.

His frustration melting, even Anthony joined in. Now peppering Liam with questions, they made it impossible for him to stay quiet and soon their conversation was even louder than the decor. Liam, Bill noticed, was engaged. Seeing that the boy was enjoying himself, he sat back and laughed along with them but he didn't say a thing. The scene was magic and all he wanted to do was watch. The meeting couldn't have gone better than if he'd planned it himself which, of course he had. But never with hopes this high.

Gazing at these kids he knew so well, he saw that he'd done something good with his life. He'd taught them for years, with everything that teaching entailed. He knew their lives, their problems, and how far they'd come. He knew their parents, too, at least the ones who stayed. Each was a survivor — Anthony from bad case of no self-esteem, Tisha from an acrimonious divorce, and Joey from physical abuse. Yet, here they were graciously entertaining a stranger at a former teacher's request.

Former. At times like this, Bill missed teaching. But the longer he’d taught the more responsibility he'd accumulated until he was seeing more screens than students and attending more board meetings than meetings with the parents. Retiring had been the right choice. He knew that. The years had begun to show. Physically and mentally, he'd been worn down. Academics. Social work. Psychiatry. Self-defense. High school teaching was no ordinary job.

Now he tutored from time to time. That was how he'd come to know them so well. Each had fallen back and he'd helped them catch up. Now, letting the laughter flow over him like an exuberant symphony playing not far away, he began to relax when, all of a sudden, one of the instruments went off-key. Leaning in, he looked around the table.

"Bowling?" he croaked. "Did someone say bowling?"

About the Author

I write queer stories. Mysteries, romance, sci-fi, and just plain storytelling. But no matter the genre or the story, love is at the core. Searching For love. Living with love. Losing it and finding it again. Add a dose of sex, wit and adventure and we're off! Although everything I write is made up, I try to anchor my stories and their characters in something real, from call centers, to caregivers, from truck drivers to spies, and to queer families living through whatever life has to dish out.

I live in Montreal with my partner not far away from the child we raised. I write in English, live in French and work in both. I try to bring that experience to my books: the challenge and excitement of loving someone from another world. It's worth the trip.
