About The Book
QSFer Reni Stankova has a new MM high fantasy book out, Heaven Trilogy book 1: The Enemy of Heaven.
Raphael is a despondent angel prince who spends his time on drugs and entertainment, trying to forget the unfair inequality of his kingdom he can do nothing about. But this changes one night when he witnesses the inhuman abilities of a young demon from the capital’s ghetto. In an instant, he knows how to change his kingdom.
Dante never trusted angels, much less royals, but after Prince Raphael saves him from an execution for a crime he didn’t commit, he follows him. And while the royal court is scandalized by the presence of a demon in the royal palace, he and his new employer work together to reveal the worst secrets of the angel elite.
But even for a powerful man like Raphael, this is a dangerous game. Dante has to protect his life as he single-handedly makes the kingdom a better place for the demon minority. And hopefully, the feelings that bloom between them don’t make their mission even harder.
The Review
I’d earlier read and reviewed The Secrets of Heaven, book 2 of this series, and had wanted to read book 1, but didn’t get a chance till now. I found it extremely entertaining. Really, this series feels very underrated.
Prince Raphael is the youngest prince of Heaven, and he dreams of a future where the demons are not second class citizens. A chance meeting with Dante, a demon with powers never seen before, makes Raphael recruit him to his cause.
Dante has lived in shadows all his life, trying to protect who he can, but when he’s betrayed by his own kind and in danger, his only chance comes from an angel prince.
But both of them have their work cut out because prejudices run as deep as secrets in Heaven, and challenging either could cost them everything.
As much as I loved Dante, it’s Raphael who held my attention in this one. He’s a bit of an idiot, but he tries his best, and his vision is something really worthy. Of the supporting cast, I loved Gabriel the best.
The world itself is intricately built and brought to life. Some of the lore does come across as info dumpy, but overall, there wasn’t a lot of it.
The Secrets of Heaven is a solid start to the series and I would recommend it to anyone who loves queer fantasy.
