About The Book

Fake dating your worst enemy—what could possibly go wrong? An enemies-to-lovers, paranormal lesbian romance that proves love can outfox anyone.

Ever since shape-shifters revealed their existence to the world, tensions between humans and Wrasa have been dangerously high. To improve their public image, the Wrasa council comes up with a bold plan: a fake relationship between one of their own and Faith MacAllister, the human daughter of their most vocal enemy.

Tala Peterson, an aloof fox-shifter with the attitude of an alpha wolf, is anything but thrilled to pose as Faith’s mate. She doesn’t trust her one bit—and rightfully so, as Faith has her own agenda. Their flirty banter is strictly for show, and if Tala finds Faith’s scent annoyingly irresistible, it’s only because of the mate scent their scientists concocted.

But when the wolf pack that raised Tala insists she bring her new mate home for a visit, the fake lovers are forced to not only share a bed but also to confront old prejudices. Soon, Faith faces a difficult choice: Should she keep spying on the Wrasa for her father, or can she trust Tala and her kind?

Enemies by Nature is the first novel of a two-book saga that concludes with Shifting Nature. While part of Jae’s shape-shifter series, they can be read independently of previous books.

The Review

Tala Peterson is a fox shifter who was raised by wolf shifters. Due to a mistake on her part, the world has been made aware of shifters, and it has caused her nothing but grief. When she is called in front of the council and told that she will be part of the PR team, she can’t imagine a worse situation. But it does get worse.

At a Wrasa (shifter) parade, Tala was seen with Faith MacAllister, the daughter of their greatest enemy, the leader of Humans Against Shapeshifters. The council decides that Tala and Faith should be part of Operation Make-Believe Mate, to show that humans and shapeshifters can have romantic relationships.

When Tala approaches Faith with the idea, she runs and reveals it to her father, who at first is angry, and then decides that he is all for it. He sees an opportunity for Faith to get up close and find evidence that the Wrasa are monsters, monsters that he is convinced killed his wife. The only stipulation that Faith has is that her six-year-old daughter, Chloe, will not be involved in any way.

Two enemies are put in a position to spy on one another. Faith shows up with flowers containing an electronic bug, only Wrasa don’t like flowers, so they are given to the next-door neighbor. Then a basket filled with food and a bottle of wine – but once again, Wrasa don’t drink, so another gift to the neighbor. The council bugs a device that Faith steals, only to discover it’s just books. Another failed attempt to get information.

One date after another goes by as they try to prove they are a legitimate couple. Then Tala feeds Faith something she is cooking. It seems that food is the way to the Wrasa heart. Faith wants to stop the fake mate operation, but her father won’t allow it.

During Tala and Faith’s dating period, Tala must attend her brother’s engagement weekend, and Faith is invited. That’s when Faith begins to question her father’s belief that all Wrasa are monsters, and starts to trust Tala. The operation may have results that no one expected.

This is book one of Tala and Faith’s story, and when I finish this review I will begin book two. I really enjoyed it, and can’t wait to find out what happens next.

Five stars.
