About The Book

Upperclassman Conall is rich, impeccably dressed, and set for a prestigious career in the Party hierarchy. He doesn’t lack for anything—except, maybe, love.

When he finds Mark, alone, abandoned and hurt, he doesn’t expect one act of kindness to alter the course of his life forever. There is more to Mark than Conall can even dream of. The beautiful, vulnerable boy Conall knows is not human. A dark power lies within Mark. It can make him immortal… but love might be the price.

The Review

This story takes place in the twenty-sixth century, where freedom and democracy no longer exist. America and Russia have been annihilated, and the threat of nuclear war became a reality.

In Dublin, the Party has the seat of power ruled by Big Brother, and a caste system exists. That caste system resulted in Mark being labeled a Fallen, since his mother died giving birth to him and his father disappeared. As an orphan, he finds himself with little chance for a future.

Mark shares an apartment with drug dealers, and when one of them accuses him of stealing, he is beaten up and then thrown out. Laying in the street, he is approached by Conall, and Upperclassman living in the Upper Quarter, protected from mutants, and also extraordinarily rich.

While he is trying to get Mark up, mutant scarabs begin attacking them. Fortunately Conall’s guard manages to kill many of them. When they are safely behind the walls of the Upper Quarter, they arrive at Conall’s mansion. Mark spends the night and then flees.

Conall doesn’t know Mark’s name, but money can buy just about anything, and soon Conall finds him.

Neither one of them has been able to get the other out of his head. Conall knows that Mark is a Fallen, but it makes no difference to him.

When Mark sneaks back into his old apartment to retrieve his belongings, one of the drug dealers attacks him. Mark kills his attacker, and even though it is self-defense, as a Fallen he will not be believed. The accidental murder will have long-lasting and dangerous repercussions for both Mark and Conall.

There are two other characters who have an impact on the story – Kaylin and Diana, both with magical powers and both involved in a rebellion against the Party.

While the first half of the book was a bit slow and confusing, it really picked up, and I am so glad that I finished it. The second half was wonderful and now I am looking forward to continuing this series.

Four stars.
