About The Book

A doctor catering to the most dangerous men in the world meets a charming nobody. Neither wants to believe the other is what they seem. They’re both wrong.

As one of Zander Kapra’s team and a survivor of the cause, Corey helps by putting his medical degree to good use. He goes wherever he’s needed to keep the family safe. Sometimes, that means patching up assassins and helping dispose of evidence. Mostly, it’s helping the victims after their rescue. It’s a calling. He’ll never stop. Now, there’s this guy who won’t stop trying to win him, and Corey doesn’t know what to think. Mostly, he thinks Rhett is full of it.

Meeting Corey was the most random moment of Rhett’s life. One second, he was chatting with a friend. The next, Rhett was staring into the sweetest face he’s ever seen. Corey keeps trying to make him go away. Rhett can’t do that. He’s hooked. Now all he has to do is convince Corey to keep him. How hard could it be?

Charmer is the eleventh book in Charity Parkerson’s Kings of the East series where assassins, crime lords, and mafia bosses run the world. These books are best when read in order.

The Review

If you have read Charity Parkerson’s books, you will be familiar with the interesting encounters that potential romantic partners in her books often experience. They may meet in mundane ways, but a noteworthy event often occurs that connects the characters in a new way.

The eleventh book in the Kings of the East series definitely has one of those events. Corey is a doctor who meets Rhett, a school teacher, at a coffee shop. A series of unexpected incidents offers the two lonely souls a chance to learn more about each other.

This story is about Rhett and Corey but builds on characters and settings from earlier books in the series. I was able to understand and enjoy the romance between Corey and Rhett without needing to read the previous books.

However, I am now curious about events from the first ten books of the series, and I need to know what happens to characters in future books. One character in particular, Dante, is a loyal friend who is willing to aggressively defend Corey. This tale stoked my curiosity about how Dante met Corey and what the future holds for him.

The story deals with some socially relevant issues and also covers a few dark subjects that involve children. I feel that the author did a good job of introducing the reader to a subject that is important but often difficult to address. I am particularly sensitive to issues involving poor treatment of kids. Sometimes I am too agitated to truly enjoy a story with that subject matter, but I was able to enjoy this story without being overwhelmed.

Charmer is a quick romance read with some socially relevant and emotionally charged subject matter. But don’t worry – the sweetness in this book is enough to counterbalance the darkness.

The hardest part about writing this review was convincing my puppy to let me have my right hand back so I could type. He is a bit of a charmer, like someone in this book. *grin*

Four stars.

The Reviewer

Aethena lives in the Pacific Northwest and vacations in the desert as often as possible. She is allergic to garlic, sleeps during the day whenever possible, and breaks out in an allergic rash when exposed to excessive sunlight. She has a degree in engineering, works at a comic book store, and goes for long bike rides at night during the full moon because of the sun allergy. Aethena was forced to switch to mostly e-books and audio books when the last floor to ceiling bookcase started to overflow. She is on her fifth e-reader, and is contemplating using her engineering degree to design an e-reader that can withstand her capacity for destruction.
