About The Book

Devin Jace lives in a huge mansion together with six other people, five of them turn furry, and one needs to drink blood to survive. Sometimes, he suspects it’s all a dream. Four years ago, he had no idea supernatural beings existed. It wasn’t until he was snatched off the street and forced to live as a blood slave he realized vampires are real and don’t sparkle.

Three years ago, Mars O’Ceallaigh was part of the team who saved a badly scarred and severely traumatized Devin. As the only vampire on the team, he got to work undercover. To keep up the facade, he tasted Devin’s blood. Not a day has gone by since without him thinking about it, both the taste of the blood and Devin. But he wants Devin to be happy, and since he knows vampires are his worst nightmare, he does his best to keep out of his way.

When the team learns Devin’s captor has escaped prison, Mars is convinced he will come for Devin. Devin might fear Mars, but there is someone he fears more, so when Mars swears to keep him safe, Devin trusts him. Mars more than enjoys being by Devin’s side at all times, but will spending every minute of every day with him be enough to keep him safe?

The Review

Holly Day’s books have a theme that often includes an obscure holiday, but one that is worthy of attention. This book focuses on National M&M’s Day.

Very few obscure holidays are more deserving of celebration in my opinion, and I was ecstatic to learn that the day exists because M&Ms are one of the primary reasons I survived college.

I’m not the only one who looks to M&Ms for a bit of comfort. Devin, the main protagonist in this book, finds his own comfort in the candy-coated chocolate pieces. Devin needs something to sooth his anxiety as he recovers from his experience as a blood slave held captive by vampires.

The vampires in this story aren’t exactly the sparkly or friendly kind. But one vampire, Mars, and a handful of shifters are responsible for Devin’s rescue.

Mars can’t stop thinking about that one small taste of Devin’s blood from the day he rescued the scarred human. Devin’s trauma and Mars’ desire to protect him from any more harm keep them at a distance from each other, but a returning danger and some tasty treats might just be the key to bringing them closer together.

The personal moments between Devin and Mars are sweet, but nicely counterbalanced by some tense action, much of which involves the supernatural law enforcement team that Mars works with and lives with. They are an interesting crew, and the world they live in has the potential to expand well beyond this story.

I enjoyed the parts of the story that focused on Mars and Devin, and I am curious about the rest of the team. I would love to read some of their stories too – I’m having fun imagining what holiday theme could bring trouble or romance for the rest of the team.

4 stars.

Aethena lives in the Pacific Northwest and vacations in the desert as often as possible. She is allergic to garlic, sleeps during the day whenever possible, and breaks out in an allergic rash when exposed to excessive sunlight. She has a degree in engineering, works at a comic book store, and goes for long bike rides at night during the full moon because of the sun allergy. Aethena was forced to switch to mostly e-books and audio books when the last floor to ceiling bookcase started to overflow. She is on her fifth e-reader, and is contemplating using her engineering degree to design an e-reader that can withstand her capacity for destruction.
