May 1996. Six inseparable friends seek revenge after one of them is brutally attacked. But their vigilante justice spins violently out of control and accidentally leaves the attacker dead. Desperate to escape as the FBI inches dangerously close, they flee, speeding across state lines, down dusty backroads to the Fontaine Motel, an isolated hideout in middle-of-nowhere Oklahoma. In a few lightning-fast days, their temporary safety reveals much more: self-discovery, love, and deadly secrets that will not only change everything, but threaten their very lives.

In 1994, high school seniors Oliver and Grant defied the odds and fell in love, but after a shocking murder shatters their sleepy small town, Grant disappears without a trace. Now, ten years later, Oliver attends their class reunion, desperate to see Grant again, but he discovers the past brings more than happiness . . . It brings secrets too.

Kelly Spencer’s best friend was brutally murdered nine years ago . . . and it’s happened again. To solve it she must revisit the past with the help of an unlikely and reluctant sidekick who understands—and shares—her painful past, and who might just hold the key to everything. Catching a vicious yet charming serial killer will lead them to old friends and new allies, and they’ll do whatever it takes to uncover the truth . . . before it’s too late.

In 1970, before deploying to Vietnam, quiet Conrad Burke meets freewheeling Travis Reid in a Detroit record store. Their deep but complicated friendship spans the next three decades, through music, letters, war, marriage . . . and murder.

From Neon Darkness . . .

Char sipped. “I hope Oliver’s not making a mistake.”

FuJane combed her fingers through Char’s hair, braided a few chunks, and said, “When you were a little girl, I took you with me to buy a new car. You were over the goddamn moon when we got to the dealership and saw a used Cadillac in neon pink. I mean, that motherfucker was bright! And you wanted me to get it. You begged me to get it. You wouldn’t shut the fuck up about that neon car.”

“I don’t remember that.”

“A dramatic child can’t remember every goddamn meltdown.”

“Very funny, mother. What’s your point?”

“It didn’t matter that the car was a piece of shit with a million miles, being held together by a lick and a promise and would probably break down in the middle of the fucking night and leave us stranded. You wanted it because it was pretty and made you happy.”

Char met her mother’s eyes. They were caring and confident.

“That’s why Oliver wants another shot with Grant. He’s forgotten all the pain and the darkness. He only remembers that Grant made him happy. He remembers Grant in neon.”

Beneath the dark makeup and golden tracksuit and cigarillo smoke, FuJane was smart and perceptive. Char had always been told by extended family members that she would grow up to be just like her. She hoped they were all right. Maybe she already was.

From Wasted Letters . . .

In the car ride back to the Vortex, Travis drove and Conrad slept in the passenger seat. The red dashboard lights cast silly and sinister shadows over Conrad’s handsome face.

With the windows down, Travis cruised Woodward awhile, wanting to extend his euphoria just a little longer.

Led Zepplin’s Whole Lotta Love played on the radio.

The late-night wind was cool.

The streets were quiet.

Conrad snored faintly.

Travis smiled.

He had a whole lotta love for this friend.

How could tomorrow ever follow today?

Because today . . .

Today was perfect.

From Bonus Material . . .

“You want to know why.” Norman’s voice was low but caring. “I’ve met a lot of spouses and friends for years wanting to know why their loved ones were killed in a senseless war, but no answer I ever gave them or could give you would be good enough. I don’t know why, and I say that as a proud lifelong patriot and serviceman. I don’t have the answers you want, son. I saw so many healthy young men lose their goddamn minds in a matter of days in that warzone.”

Travis’s eyes stung.

He was on the verge of tears.

“I have my theories, but that’s all they are. Theories don’t prove anything or help any healing . . . ”
