Cars skidded sideways in front of him on the slushy road surface as their brake lights blinked on. He watched the rear of several cars jump up after running into other cars in front of them, in the far-right lane of Interstate 495 in Maryland.
Oh, shit! This is bad.
Dread sank in as his eyes darted around the cabin of his uncle’s 2020 Cadillac Escalade ESV. His brain went on autopilot and his hands and feet sprang into action. He jabbed the brake and swirled the steering wheel left and right. The large white SUV unsettled then felt like it was floating. The engine barked loudly as he stabbed the throttle. The sharp whine of the supercharger screamed over the once serene interior as the 700-horsepower engine furiously spun all four of the large multi-piece 26-inch wheels. He unsettled the truck then let the truck steer itself into a drift.READ MORE
The familiar and nostalgic sound of his cousins playing in the third-row seat of the long SUV changed from laughs and giggles to yelps, and then silence. The Escalade danced around on the slushy ground as the 2010 Toyota Camry in front of it went into a spin trying to avoid the quickly building pile-up of cars in the right lane of the four-lane expressway.
The very long Cadillac gracefully wafted within inches of the spinning Toyota Camry. When the Camry fishtailed and snapped the other direction, the Cadillac matched the Camry’s rotation, spinning in tandem with it. As the Toyota rotated farther into its spin—and toward the building pile-up—the Escalade bobbed elegantly on its large glinting wheels and broke free from the Camry’s orbit. The glistening white truck completed its 360-degree rotation and slid sideways for another two hundred feet, flinging snow and slush from its tires, before the driver was able to correct the slide. In the process, he managed to completely avoid the pile-up that was now behind them. He looked in the rear-view mirror and watched the Toyota spin tail-end first into the pile-up, then continue to spin before coming to a rest, nose-first in the guard rail.
His heart was racing and his hands were shaking as his eyes darted around the rear-view mirror at the shocked and terrified faces of his mom, his aunt, and his younger cousins. His uncle, in the passenger seat, was frozen and dead silent.COLLAPSE
