They said they came in peace, wanting only to gather the righteous and take them to paradise. The aliens did so much more, emptying entire cities of humanity, destroying governments and political borders, taking all resources they considered valuable, and departing just as suddenly as they arrived, leaving Earth devastated. Their families taken, fourteen-year-old, Luke, and his best friend, Arnie, find themselves just trying to survive.

Ten years later, Luke and Arnie are as close as blood brothers. They survive as nomadic traders, traveling the continent, salvaging whatever they can find and bartering for food and water. They trust few, and call no place home. It’s not the life they thought they’d be living, but it’s the best they can do.

Rhett and his parents survived the alien invasion by retreating to their bunkers in rural Oklahoma. He keeps his family hidden and only ventures out on sporadic trade runs.

Until he is caught by an interloping gang bent on destruction.

When a good turn for a woman on her own leads them into the middle of a war between rival factions, Luke and Arnie must decide whether to finally stay and fight for those they care about, or keep on running.

Trust is hard when morals and integrity are forgotten words and you’re not even sure who your real friends are.

Excerpt:

I squirmed in my seat feeling uncomfortable with the compliment, and then about jumped out of my skin when a dark, shadowy shape slunk into the kitchen.

“Fucking hell!” I yelled and stuck my feet up on my chair like a little kid.

What happened next was the stuff I remember seeing in Saturday morning cartoons as a little boy. Rhett stood up so fast he knocked his chair over with a crash and went into a defensive crouch, looking around wildly for the threat. Arnie came running in, bare ass naked, with a knife in each hand and tripped over the dark shape that had crouched in the doorway when I yelled. He made this weird half falling, half dancing, with a little bit of a pirouette move to keep his balance, and ended up beside me. The shape let out a yowling screech and dashed for Rhett, climbing him like he was a tree to sit on his shoulder, hissing and spitting at all of us. Last of all, Sadie came strolling in, took a look at all of us and cracked up laughing.

“Let me guess,” she chortled. “You finally met Moffat. Nice outfit, Arnie. Haven’t seen a sight like that since I was a young woman dancing naked under the full moon.”

“Moffat?” I asked, feeling more than a little foolish.

“One of my cats,” Rhett explained, dragging the hissing, spitting ball of fur from his shoulder and cradling it in his arms.

“A cat,” Arnie deadpanned.

A sheepishly put my feet back on the floor and sat up straighter. Arnie threw me a look that spoke of future retribution and left the room. I watched his naked ass as he walked away. It’s a really nice ass and I’m only human. I noticed Rhett eyeing it, too, and when he caught me looking we grinned at each other. Arnie would never know. Sadie followed him out, still chuckling.

“Stop looking at my ass,” Arnie grumbled, but I wasn’t sure if he was talking to us or Sadie, since we’d all been ogling him.

About the Author

I’m a self-published writer of stories set on worlds that live only in my mind. If you think it can’t happen, well, I do my best to prove you wrong. I mainly write romance because I like to take the most unlikely of couples (or trios) and give them a happily ever after. My characters quite often pick up the personalities of my family and friends – which can lead to the most interesting of conversations, believe me.

I live in the wilds of Northeast Oklahoma with Mija, a rescued hound of unknown mixed heritage, and a rose point Siamese named Kiko who delights in tormenting both Mija and me when we’d rather be relaxing or sleeping.
