Sam and Reese exchanged valentines when they were children, neither realizing how much those simple cards would impact their lives. When fate brings both together again as adults, what started as a friendship grows into more. They celebrate every year on the day that brought them together, Valentine’s Day by reading from their first Valentine’s and looking back on all the events that have shaped their lives as a couple. Valentine’s Day brings them more love and happiness than they could ever have imagined all those years ago.

“Hey, Reese. Sorry, I’m late. I got hung up at work,” I said as I took the seat next to him.
He reached up and rubbed his hand over the close-cropped hair at the back of my head.
“Hey, baby, it’s okay. Nita here’s been keeping me company.” He winked at the bartender, who rolled her eyes at him before she turned to me.
“Hi, Sam. What can I get you?”
“Hey, Nita. I’ll just take a beer. Anything dark would be great.”
“You got it.” She took out a chilled glass and filled it from one of the many taps that lined the bar. Both of us were huge beer fans, and this was our favorite place to go on a Friday night to sample one or two . . . or most of the time, a few. It was close to our house, so it made it easy to walk home if we needed—which usually we did.
“I’ve got something for you,” Reese said as he leaned in close.
“Really? What a coincidence, I’ve got something for you too.”
This was a routine we

d practiced for years, but something that never got old and meant the world to us both. Reaching into his pocket Reese pulled out a small yellowed envelope, and pressed it to his lips before passing it to me.
“Happy Valentine’s Day, sweetheart,” he whispered, so close to my ear it made me shiver.
I looked deep into the eyes of the man I loved and reached into my own pocket for an envelope similar to the one he’d just given me. I smiled as I reached for his hand that was resting on the bar, squeezed it before slipping the envelope into his palm.
“Happy Valentine’s Day,” I said. “I love you, more today than yesterday.”
He smiled before kissing me lightly on the cheek.
I immediately opened my envelope, and as soon as I pulled out the old valentine, I couldn’t hold back my smile. On the front was an image of Darth Vader his light saber drawn and ready, looking every bit as creepy as he ever had. Across the top read “Together we can rule the galaxy.”
I glanced at Reese to find him watching me, waiting for my reaction before he opened his card. I unfolded mine and the note written inside in a child’s handwriting said, “Hi Sam, will you be my Valentine? Check yes or no. But I really hope you check yes. Your friend, Reese.”
It made me smile every time I read it, it was so freaking sweet. And to think from this small gesture when we were kids, I had found the man I would eventually marry, still blew my mind. I looked over at Reese and knew he was thinking the same thing.

About the Author

BL Maxwell grew up in a small town listening to her grandfather spin tales about his childhood. Later she became an avid reader and after a certain vampire series she became obsessed with fanfiction. She soon discovered Slash fanfiction and later discovered the MM genre and was hooked.

Many years later, she decided to take the plunge and write down some of the stories that seem to run through her head late at night when she’s trying to sleep.
