“We can’t keep doing this,” he finally said. “You’ve always known it would have to end. We have to be… adults. Real, functioning adults.”
“And that doesn’t include fucking your brother,” Devin said. That time, it was his voice that was laden with bitterness.
“No.” Mateo sighed, pulling away from him. “It doesn’t.”
Pain grabbed Devin’s chest, making it hard for him to draw in a full breath. “It could,” he pleaded. “Just stay with me.”
Mateo rose, and Devin grabbed his wrist. Even in the darkness, he was aware of where his twin was. He always knew; they both always knew where the other was.
“Let go,” Mateo said, tugging against Devin’s grip.
“No,” Devin said, tears welling up in his eyes. “I’m not just going to let you leave.”
READ MOREMateo pulled harder, but Devin didn’t let him go. “You don’t have a choice, Devin.” Mateo’s voice was sharp, cold, so unlike the brother he’d always known. Minutes apart as they were, Devin was still the younger brother, and he’d been spoiled.
He was used to getting what he wanted, even if it meant Mateo had to go without.
And now…
Devin was trembling as he grabbed the syringe from inside the pillowcase, the very tool he’d hoped not to have to use… But he had to. Mateo was too stubborn to see the truth of it, how things were really meant to be, and Devin would have to remind him.
“Let go, Devin!” Mateo snapped at him.
Before he could pull hard enough to loosen Devin’s grasp, Devin used his grip on his brother’s arm to keep track of where he was… and of where his arm was. And he quickly yanked the cap of the syringe off with his teeth before plunging it into Mateo’s arm and pumping it into his veins.
