Miles to Millicent

by Pat Henshaw

Successful attorney Zack isn’t an inspired gift giver. In fact, he’s been known to rely on shirts, ties, and socks as presents to his lover, Miles. This Valentine’s Day, however, Zack is prepared to give Miles what he’s always secretly longed to get: a special night on the town.

But first, Zack must solicit the aid of his best friends, super shopper Fisk and makeup artist Grady. Only they can turn Zack’s extravagant present into something extraordinary.

Will Miles be thrilled by all the thought and planning Zack is putting into the night? Or will the gift fall as flat as past ones have? Only a concerted effort of friends could possibly pull off this coup

Excerpt:
    • As we stepped into the maelstrom, a tall rotund man waddled up to us.

    • “Fisk! Fisk! Fisk, my friend!” Like a human Tyrannosaurus rex, he extended a short arm ending in a long-nailed hand. The nails, painted blood red, reached toward us in greeting.

    • Fisk bypassed the hand and nails, pushing in to give the rex a hug.

    • “Cosmo! Your Emporium looks and smells and sounds like a dream come true. Well done. Well done.”

    • Cosmo preened for a moment, pulling back his talons and standing proud.

    • “So, what can I help you find, you and your beautiful friend?” The huge man eyed me like I was a piece of veal ready to be sold in one of the stalls.

    • I’m five feet eight inches tall, with porcelain skin, intense blue eyes, and yellow-gold hair. I’ve been asked if I was Swedish, Danish, Finnish, or elf. Cosmo looked ready to gobble me up. I stood taller, hoping to channel my inner Viking warrior.

    • Fisk, as usual, missed my being uneasy and jumped right in.

    • “Ah, this is Zack, a do-gooder lawyer who needs to find the perfect Valentine’s Day gift for his tall, dark, and handsome lover.”

    • I smiled, but didn’t extend my hand, nor did Cosmo offer me his. With Fisk’s introduction, the lines had been drawn, and I was free to shop.

    • Cosmo gave me a lingering look and a sigh, then brightened.

    • “My lovely Zack, you have come to exactly the right place.” He turned and waved his hand toward the hubbub. “Here, you can get anything you want.”

    • I swallowed a laugh. Was he quoting the lyrics to Arlo Guthrie’s “Alice’s Restaurant?” Should I reply, “Excepting Alice”?

    • Fisk elbowed me and gave a tiny shake of his head. His gesture shouted, “Don’t poke the bear!” Or maybe he was saying I needed to be fenced in?

    • He turned to the rex-armed grizzly.

    • “Cosmo, Zack is feeling a little overloaded amid the lushness. Is there a buyer room available so I can shop for him and let him select his purchases without being too caught up in the fun?”

    • Cosmo laughed, a sound which stopped the surrounding buyers and sellers for a moment.

“In other words, you think you can find what he wants better than he can?” Cosmo’s eyes twinkled toward Fisk, then he turned to survey me from top to bottom again. “You’re probably right. You’re probably right.”
